The drive is inserted correctly, caddy side up? When you boot with an Windows boot disk, it reports there is no drive to install Windows? Did you try to do a fdisk?

You know this x31 sees other drives, correct? So it's not a drive controller issue.

Has this HDD been used in other machines at all? Brand? Where did you buy?

Is your bios set to auto-detect? IF so, can you try to detect it manually? (Not even sure if they do that in bios anymore ...)

and whoever asked about the install disk, good point: have you used an OS disk to try to see / format / identify / partition the disk yet?

I originally formatted the HDD [travelstar]] in my X20 because it has the base with the drives and it worked great in there and in other machines.Yes it is installed correctly. I tried last night ad pulled the HDD out of my R52 and it recognize it but would not fully boot. I have tried a stand alone Panasonic dvd drive with no luck. I now have a IBM portable drive bay 2000 that I am going to try today. It is probably the partition or the bios but here's the problem, I don't have a battery for it yet so I don't think I can flash the bios. We will figure it out and please keep the help coming.

On a brighter note I picked up a mint condiition X23 with both external floppy and dvd drives and an awesome case for $50 yesterday [yeah craigslist] and a good friend finally mail back my Toshiba portage 3110 so I have more toys to play with. I also did some trading and picked up the R52 for nothing. It had a roken screen and I have a few of those so free R52 [again yeah craigslist]. Right now I think I have a 600,t20,t21,t23,x20,x23,x31,r52,2200,and a r61i,plus several other brands, I am happy.

can anybody make me an original X31 restore disc? It would help me out very much, also does anyone have a good X31 battery they are interested in selling or trading?
