adapting x20 to use wireless PCI - antenna choices

#1 Post by pellicle » Sat Aug 01, 2009 2:36 am

Hi

I've been having some lockup problems with my x20 when using a netgear PCMCIA wireless card, I've liked the internal LAN on my x31 so on a hunch I bought a used PCI card for the x20. I can take out the existing card and fit it (which will leave 2 connectors un fitted and no LAN or modem) without problems

I've downloaded the software to support it and the Access tool to drive it.

It works ... but as it does not have any antenna, it only works 10cm from the router access point :-)

so, the x22 models had a wireless system built into the screen (as does the x31)

does anyone know if the x31 antenna is compatible with the x20 screen?

thanks

Hey pal, I am using X21 and hv installed Intel 2200BG Wifi myself,
wif Antenna installed.

actually you have to modify the ending of the antenna (Something like an alluminium block)
like using a clamp to squeeze it till flat and stick them right under the screen.
Any internal Antenna would work. But U hv to modify them yourself. (not a hard job. Just do it brutally, lol)

But One to note, bear in mind the Hinge cover and the display ribbon cable.
The antenna wires must be on top of the screen ribbon cable while crossing the hinge. never try to put the wires under that or u hv to take the risk of breaking the ribbon cable.

all da best =]

The lid antenna works best if there is a ridged plastic insert on the side of the lid which is where the receiving end of the antenna attaches. The range will be reduced if your lid doesn't have this insert. You can trap the stripped antenna wire under the head of one of the upper screen screws, which also works pretty well.
