X40 vs X41 (non tablet) and power consumption of thinkpad X

#1 Post by bgx » Wed Aug 26, 2009 7:56 am

Hi,

i just ordered an X40 on ebay france for my gf.
and i received a very neat... X41!

After some test, i am a little disapointed since i wanted two exactly similar machines in case one crashed.
the other big disapointement is the power consumption, way higher on the X41.

Exteriorly, they look 100% identical. Is it true that i can push the mother board of one onto the other one? that would be great as my original X40 is not as neat as the X41? HDD, keyboard compatibility between X40 and X41?

Here are the difference i saw, if it can help someone, and if other people can add things.

- chipset: advantage X41 (so it seems)
i855M vs i910M.
+ i910M: better graphic card. Would it allow aero on windows 7?

- memory: advantage X41
DDR2 vs DDR1, better for the X41.

- Proc: advantage X41 (faster when needed and lower power@same speed when needed)
X40 banias LV (0.13, 1.2Ghz@1.1V 600Mhz@0.764V
X41: dothan LV (0.09, 1.5Ghz@1.1 600Mhz@0.7V

- screen: advantage X41
more yellowish on X40 (aging CCFL): better for X41
better viewing angle on X41, particularly for upper viewing (lower is still [censored], thx to TN).

- power consumption: advantage X40!!!! by 30%/2W !
I get 6.7W for the X40/i855@600Mhz/0.764V (banias), 5.27W with the screen and HDD shut down
vs 8.8W for the X41/i910@600Mhz/0.7V (dothan can be underclocked lower than the banias), 6.9W with the screen and HDD shut down.
And that s the most important, and the reason why i am a little disapointed.

That s a lot of difference! 2W over around 6W is 33% more power consumption, despite more undervoltage and DDR2 usage.

The fan also spean much more frequently on the X41 because the chipset is using much more power!

If you have power consumption figures on other XYx Thinkpad, i would be glad to see the lowest power consuming one!

my mom got a X200tablet, but under vista, it is usually very power hungry (disk activity a lot becaue of Vista), i got to install windows XP.

Like judging drive speed, power is not absolute either. Here is a chart of comparative power consumption:

I have a Dothan X40, 2371-LCU. This is really a pretty good machine. There are ULV X40 too.
