*URGENT* Win Vista Constantly Crashing on X41T

#1 Post by kerryh8er04 » Mon Sep 14, 2009 7:32 pm

This is my main computer for school fortunately I think I have everything I need backed up on my flash drive. However to the problem. It only started yesterday after it apparently ran out of battery and when I plugged it back in and started it up the crashing began. I would get a blue scree of death (BSD) with the error win32k something something... I looked it up is seems to be a problem with multicore processors and mine is not multicore. However I did get windows to run under safe mode with no crashing problems. After a few hours I tried running under normal and it crashed again with the same or similar error. But I was stubborn and for some reason it quit crashing and ran just fine for the rest of the day. Now today for some reason it started crashing with BSD all over again. Only this time when I could log into windows under safe mode it still crashed and there would be about a dozen errors reporting that things like windows explorer experienced an error and had to close down and then several other necessary processed would shut down and then BSD. Now I can't seem to get windows to run long enough even to log in it crashes sometimes before the nice windows vista welcome screen...

So after explaining... I am really wondering what is the advice from people with much more experience than I have at this... Is it a software issue and I should just reformat and reinstall... or hardware related? hoping to God not processor or motherboard related...

Any help would be appreciated

If you haven't disabled system restore, try restoring the PC to a restore point before the problem started. The best way to do this is from the Windows Recovery Environment before the PC boots. If you have or can borrow a Vista DVD you can boot the PC from the DVD and enter the recovery environment. Choose to restore the PC to an older restore point.

Once you get back into Vista check the logs, especially Event Viewer > Custom Views > Administrative Events to see if any of the error messages give you a clue to the source of the BSODs. On laptops I would be especially suspicious of bad sectors on the hard disk, so do a careful check of your disk with Lenovo's PC Doctor or by running chkdsk /r on each partition.

It's likely either a hard disk with bad sectors or bad memory. If you can boot to the Vista install CD, run the memory test. If that's OK, then boot to a command prompt on the Vista CD and run chkdsk /r on each partition to check for bad sectors.

I'm doing a memory test right now... it already says I have a hardware problem.. I'll check and see what it says after it is done..

If you do have bad RAM then take out the removable module and re-test the 512 MB of RAM that's soldered to the motherboard. If you're lucky, the bad memory will be in the removable module. Memory is pretty inexpensive right now, so that would be the best outcome for you. Or, maybe the module isn't making good contact, so remove and reinsert it and test again.
