My X24 is just sitting with a black screen. The indicator lights come on. When I hold the power button down it turns off and on again, but that's about it.
I connected a monitor to the VGA port, but "no signal".
Just once I saw the IBM logo come up as it does at the start of the BIOS, but it just froze, unresponsive to the keyboard (F2). Eventually I rebooted it and then it was back to black.
No difference if on battery or plugged in.
Any suggestions, or is it kaput?

Re: Sudden death!
Try removing all "optional" items. With an X24, there's not much and only one bit requires some disassembly:
- hard drive
- any PCMCIA or CF card
- any USB device
- memory from the slot on the bottom
- the MiniPCI card; this is the one which requires removal of the keyboard but could be your problem
- I'm assuming that the system is not docked, but if it is, remove it from the Ultrabase/dock/port replicator
Boot the system in this stripped-down mode and see what happens. If everything looks normal (no beep codes, system access the BIOS, screen lights up, etc.), then shut it off, add back one item and re-boot. I'd start with the memory module first, then the hard drive. I've seen both a 600X and T2x systems act like they've got a major power problem and it was due to a defective MiniPCI card.
Pessimist note: It could also be your motherboard but let's tackle that after trying the items I've listed above...

I agree with Ray's suggestion. See my recent experience:
