New owner - IBM X40

Hi,

few days ago I bought the IBM X40. It is in MINT condition, I still can't believe it

But I have few question / problems:

1. My Bluetooth mouse (Lenovo ThinkPad BT mouse) keeps disconnecting. Every time when this happen, USB disconnect sound beeps (like when you disconnect USB device). X40 has integrated BT.

2. LCD screen has few white spots, I don't know hot to better explain because of my English. It is like when you have water under LCD but maybe it is some other issue. It doesn't bother me much but still you can see it on white background.

3. When I open Lenovo Access Connections (latest version) there is no option to control WiFi card, but WiFi works great via Windows XP.

Thats a common problem with the X40, caused by pressure on the lid when transporting.
I also got a mint used X40, but made marks like that in the first week. Am more careful now.

Congratulations on your "new" IBM X40, it's a nice little machine (if you replace the standard hard drive ).

I also had some white dots on my screen. I think the only thing you can do against them is to replace the screen, like I did.
Be careful, this is not the easiest thing to do and it is not really cheap. If you do it, be sure to get the right screen with the right connector!

Your X40 may have the BT function added later. Does the Clear plate on the LCD has a BT symbol? What is the machine Type and Model numbers?

Remove the KB and bottom door. Is the antenna connected properly to the BT card? It should be a white cable. Does it go up to the LCD housing thru the left hinge?

Does the WiFi card have a FRU number? If so, what is the FRU number? What is the AC version installed? When you press Fn+F5, can you see both the WiFi and BT cards listed?

I just want to say I'm also a new owner of a X40, took delivery of it last week and it's fantastic. The condition of the X40 is very good/excellent and according to the seller (a forum member) the LCD is new too.

Before I took delivery of it, I read a little about the performance of the X40, with many people saying the HD being dreadfully slow. Well, after playing with it for the last couple of days, I don't think it's that bad at all

As to the form factor and size, I'm loving it. I am so glad I went for this rather than buying a new Netbook (Sammy N20 or the IdeaPad S-10)

At around half the price of a new Netbook, it's an absolute bargin

sjthinkpader: BT is factory installed, and it has BT LED on the cover. PN is 2386-h4g. I will check later psychical connection. When I press FN+F5 there is only a BT listed, no wifi. I will also check later FRU of the WiFi card to assure that it is IBM original part.

Also thanks to all for tips and info about screen.

And there is question no 4: None of my USB ports on the docking aren't working. The one on the X40 is fine, but those 3 on the docking acts like dead.

Reseat the X40 in your X4 Ultrabase and see if the USB ports come back.

About WiFi, it is IBM original part, FRU is 93P3485, but I still can't see it when I press FN+F5, it is not listed. Access connection and WiFi driver are both lates version.

About Bluetooth, physical connection is OK but I still have problem with it. Mouse is working OK for 5-10 seconds then suddenly stops for 2-3 seconds and after that is OK for 5-10 seconds and so on... Bluetooth is also original, it has FRU number.

It looks like wifi is controlled by Microsoft's "Wireless Zero Configuration" instead of Acces Connections.
You can try to switch it of (Configuration - System - Services - Scroll down and look for this service).
Don't know if it works, but you can try.

About bluetooth.
Can you try another bluetooth device to determine the root-cause (X40 or mouse) ?

I have already try that (Wireless Zero Configuration). True, not via services but via wifi network controller but same goal.

About Bluetooth - Yes, I will try with another BT module.

With the WiFi card in the computer, find the device driver in the System Properties, Hardware Device Manager and delete the driver. Remove the WiFi card and reboot it once. Shut down the computer and insert the WiFi card and go thru the driver installation. Since it is an intel card, you will need to run the install utility in addition to installing the driver.
