Proud new owner of an X41T

#1 Post by Temetka » Sat Oct 24, 2009 6:02 am

So I took possession of a lightly used X41T in trade for my old T60.

My first thoughts:

Fear. Fear that I had made a bad choice in the trade. I was giving up a better specced machine and was worried about Windows 7 performance. As you will read below, this fear was unfounded.

Man this machine is both small and light. Exactly what I wanted. While I do miss the Thinklight having a tablet far makes up for that. The screen is very easy on my eyes and incredibly bright as well. Some people have complained of the 40GB HD making clicking noises. While I have heard them in this unit, it hasn't bothered me at all. Like a kid with a new toy, this piece of gear has barely been out of my hands all day long. I read no documentation on how to use the tablet. I just loaded Windows 7, drivers, and my copies of Office 2007 Pro and OneNote 2007 (both owned on a legit basis), firefox, and went to town.

I was able to figure out how to use the little tablet input dude on the left side of the screen with no problems. Whatever magic sauce Microsoft put into it works great. I'll be the first to admit that my handwriting leaves something to be desired and this machine was able to figure out my chicken scratch with relative ease - and speed. I've only lightly used OneNote in the past, but figured it would be an excellent addon to my X41T (now named 'Tabby' cause I'm so original :) ). OneNote works awesome. I can see myself leaving this program open and using it all the time.

So of course I have some initial questions and here they are:

1. I want a red and black neoprene sleeve with the IBM logo on it like I had for my old T41p. Where can I locate one that will accommodate my X41T with an 8-Cell battery?

2. What is the cheapest (price, not quality) 64GB SSD for this machine? I know it's 1.8" PATA and some require the use of a ZIF connector. So basically, what do I need to order and from whom?

3. RAM. My machine currently has 1.25GB. From me reading on the forums here, I can max it out at 2.25GB through the use of a 2GB stick. I also understand that due to chipset limitations I will only be able to use 2GB of it. That's fine and is 768MB more than I have now.

4. I stuck a 2GB high speed SD card into the slot and configured it for ready boost. Minus the slow 4200RPM speed of the hard disk, this system hasn't left me wanting for CPU performance. Firefox is snappy, flash plays in full screen just fine, office runs like a champ and even photoshop plugs along just fine. So is ReadyBoost a fail waiting to happen? I've never used it before and was curious for some real world advice on what I can expect from it.

5. GMA900. Any hacks to get Aero? I understand Intel hasn't and won't write a WDM Driver for this system under Vista or Windows 7. So can I use the XP driver and get Aero or am I just screwed? The lack of Aero doesn't really bother me too much, but it would be nice to have.

6. While in portrait mode with how the heck do I highlight text? Ex: In firefox reading the forums I wanted to highlight and copy the dimensions of my Thinkpad and copy it into OneNote. However browsing the forums in portrait mode means that I have to scroll left and right. So clicking and dragging in the window, drags the forum and does not highlight text. I can highlight text using the pen if it is in a text box though.

7. I do a lot of technical reading on a wide variety of subjects. My bread and butter is IT consulting but I also enjoy physics, engineering, medicine, elctronics and so on. I do a TON of reading on my laptops. How have you guys been able to use the machine as an e-book reader? I primarily stick to web and PDF so it shouldn't be any problem for me. However I was just curious as to what the other tablet people use for reading and whatnot.

Man what a long read.

I can't tell you guys what this is like for me. Using the device with no training or ever having used a tablet before, everything felt natural. From swiping backwards to erase a word while writing to how to insert the text. Screen rotation works great. Everything is very smooth and for the most part very fast. This machine feels almost nearly as fast as the T60 I got rid of - and that is what surprised me. Perhaps I forgot the true power of the Pentium M, or underestimated it when coupled with Windows 7 which is simply put - a killer OS. The small size (I've always preferred ultra portable machines), great tablet functionality and great performance really makes me question why more geeks aren't using one. I don't think I will ever go back to a standard laptop again.

If you've read this far, thanks.

Man this is sooo cool.

EDIT: Posted in the X6x forum. Sorry guys. Hey mods, can you move this for me please?

2. It seems to be about $120 for 32GB and $180-200 for 64GB. There are a few Lenovo/Samsung SSD on eBay and a web store in Ireland called MemoryC selling pin type IDE SSDs. You can find various ZIF solution cheaper than this but only by chance.

4. Readyboost helps in reducing boot time.

5. I haven't tried it yet; install Vista, extract the video driver, reinstall Win7, restore the Vista driver.

Temetka:

Congratulations from another Tablet PC owner! It's a good thing that you didn't start out with the original Lenovo preload of Windows XP on the X41 Tablet; it was a real dog. Windows 7 is much, much better. I ran 7 Beta on an X41T from when it was released in February, and later 7 RC until I sold the machine earlier this year (I found an offer on an X61 Tablet that I couldn't refuse).

As far as I know you will be unable to get Aero to work with the Intel 915 GMA unless some clever person comes up with a hack.

You may want to try installing the Firefox extensions "Grab and Drag" and "Fire Gestures" for a really nice browsing experience with the pen. However, FF doesn't support pen entry as well as IE does.

Enjoy!

Intel 80GB 1.8" SATA SSD is $199 at microcenter now. Highest quality and not much more than the cheapest 64GB ones.

It'll take a bit of work and ingenuity to get it to interface with the tablet though.

I have grab and drag installed and I think it it is what is causing my text highlight fail. Instead of the standard mouse arrow, I have a hand. I tried the various key combos to switch between text toggle and to be honest they do nothing. I only installed grab and drag so I could scroll without having to scroll from the right hand side of the browser window. I'll give it another day or two of experimentation but if I can't have a very basic feature back then that extension will be removed.

Yeah, sometimes G&D will misinterpret what you're trying to do. There should be an icon for G&D on the toolbar (it looks like a grabber hand) that you can click to disable it.

I already disabled it, and yes it was the problem.

Now I have a new question:

Bios is at 2.06 and EC is at 1.02

I mention this because the machine thinks it is plugged in even when it is not. So I was thinking to update them. However I already have the latest BIOS and the Embedded Controller update fails with the following message:

DeviceIoControl() returns 24. Please restart your system and execute the BIOS or embedded controller update again.

What is interesting is that the number returned varies. When trying last night it was a 2. When trying earlier today it was 1. The program I am using will update to EC 1.02 which is what I already have so that could be problem. For some reason I thought the EC could go to firmware 1.23 but I could be mistaken.

I still get about 4 hours on battery, I would just like the system to know when it is plugged in and when it isn't.

Thanks.

I looked back in my notes and while I never ran the RTM version of Win 7 on the X41T, I did run the beta and RC versions. I ran them using BIOS version 2.06 and EC version 1.02, which are apparently still the latest versions, and the system properly detected whether the AC adapter was plugged in or not.

Are you using the Lenovo power manager (the one that displays a battery icon near the notification area)? I never installed this and instead relied on Win 7 to manage the power settings. I did, however, have the Lenovo ACPI power management driver installed, which was automatically downloaded via Windows Update.

You could try running a Windows 7 power report; it may give you clues to help narrow this down. From an administrative command prompt enter the following: powercfg -energy. Read the docs: powercfg /? to find the location of the file that is saved when you run the report.

I'm in the midst of loading Win 7 right now.

Question: Did you reload the Thinkvantage software (pwr mgr, connectivity, etc)? Or, did you find it not necessary?

One thing I have seen while running the compatability software is that it wanted me to update the Intel Pro/Wireless adapter. According to IBM the driver I had was up to date. So, I don't know if it was looking for the driver based on Vista, since I had a version of XP on the system.

Any other insights on updating the X41T? I can't wait to try out the tablet features...I've never had one and this should be fun.

Thanks,
Gary

1. See this post http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 26#p524426

2. There are at least 3 people selling the official Lenovo 60GB replacement SSD on eBay right now, and 2 of them are offering them for below USD200. At such price I think it's the best choice. Other brands maybe a tad cheaper, but they also bring along the 2010 error.

Otherwise, I think the cheapest option is to use a low-end CF, but the performance will probably leave much to be desired.

4. It's kind of a waste to use a high speed SD card on the X4x-series, since the SD slot just cannot handle it. Besides, the SD slot has very high CPU usage. If you get a SSD, which has minimal seek time anyway, I think it's better to leave the SD slot alone.

5. I have searched about this as well, and... No... I will be happy to be proved wrong on this.

7. I usually use my X61T to read the bible. It's a bit heavy and sometimes hot, but otherwise fine, and being able to jot down handwritten notes is, nice.

And turn down the screen brightness eases the eyestrain.

BTW, those e-ink-based readers are probably better for thy eyes, lighter, have greater battery life and don't have any heat issue but, they also lack the flexibility of a real PC.

Cheers.
