2GB ram module
Hi all,
Since I know that it IS possible to put a 2GB module in the X41, which will give you 2GB of ram (0.5GB is pre-installed - so you 'lose' 0.5GB, but you gain 0.5GB compared with the 'official' max of 1.5GB).
I looked what I can order easily here and I have 4 choices (from cheap to more expensive):
Kingston ValueRAM KVR533D2S4/2G
Kingston ValueRAM KVR533D2S4K2/2G (Dual channel)
Kingston KTH-ZD8000A/2G
Kingston KAC-MEME/2G
I don't know what 'ValueRAM' and 'Dual Channel' mean.
Can I just go for the cheapest? Or is it worth going for 'Dual Channel' or other models?
Anyone advise / experience with the models listed?
Thanks so much again!

Re: 2GB ram module
Just go for the cheapest without dual channel.
Dual channel would be 2x1GB, which X41 only has one slot.
Here's the cheapest one on newegg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145172
Corsair is probably a better brand than kingston. Their service is top notch and they have a high reputation amongst the most hardcore enthusiasts. But if the kingston is cheaper, go for that, they're all pretty much the same.

Re: 2GB ram module
thanks astroidea
I didn't know a PC2-5300 would work as well (I took the PC2-4200 knowledge from http://reviews.cnet.com/tablet-pcs/leno ... 98077.html).
So higher PC2 speeds / versions (?) work in the x41?
Then the Corsair VS2GSDS667D2 is the cheapest without dual channel here in the Netherlands (the shop you referred to does not offer international shipping).
Thanks again!

Re: 2GB ram module
Any speed ram would work in your X41, but your X41 would just run it at PC4200, hence the recommendation to just buy the cheapest one.
Come to think of it, that corsair I linked in the same ram I bought for my X41T when I upgraded it.

I'd second that.astroidea wrote:Just go for the cheapest
I personally don't care that much about dual channeling, I don't think the difference would be so noticeable for the tasks my TP are used. My understanding (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) is that dual channel works (at least on Desktops) when you have two RAM sticks with the same specs and same size.
As you plan to buy a 2GB Stick and have 512MB solded on board I think the conditions for dual channel are not met.
I would be also curious to see what's the performance gains between 1.5Gb and 2GB...
Cheers!

Re: 2GB ram module
My experience said otherwise. I had a new Corsair module failed, in the middle of a SP3 update. Of course the image was trashed.astroidea wrote:...

Kingston was the preferred module assembler for quite a few top tier DRAM chip manufacturers over the years. They are much bigger and more experienced than Corsair. At one point they were bought by Softbank, a software house and cellphone carrier in Japan then spin out again. The founder David Sun is still running that company. The other pioneer module assembler acquired and spin out again was Smart Modular, thru Solectron.
Where do you live, Walnut? Kingston is just down the road in Fountain Valley.

I'm sure every brand has its duds. Can't judge a whole company based on one failure. How was their service though?

Re: 2GB ram module
I can consider myself lucky then. I've lost count of which brand I bought to update my TPs and my desktops as well. I'm too lazy now to check my old invoices, but most of them were combinations of Kingston and Corsair. Hopefully my luck keeps like that in the future...

Re: 2GB ram module
Doesn't really matter what the after sale service was, modules should be tested and they didn't. They rely on the user to test their product, which is pxxx poor.astroidea wrote:I'm sure every brand has its duds. Can't judge a whole company based on one failure. How was their service though?

Sucks to hear about your experience, but do you believe that kingston doesn't have any DOAs?
I see 2 on the first page of reviews for kingston.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductRe ... 6820134513
Anyways, both are top tier brands and you can't go wrong with either. I just like corsair more as they cater more to enthusiasts.
