X20 wireless mod

#1 Post by rev » Tue Feb 15, 2005 11:27 am

Hi,
did anyone made a successfull X20 wireless antenna mod?
I thinking of upgrading my X20 with a wireless minipci card.
In the disply assembly should be enough space for an antenna.
What do you think? Any suggestions?

There's probably enough room in the display frame. I'd be more worried about routing the wires back into the base through the hinge.

Different question, same topic: Has anyone here tried CF wireless cards in the X20 CF card slot? Usually they are sold for PDAs, so I wonder whether they work in the X20. The antennas are often more compact than those on regular PC cards and won't stick out as much ...

Well, i read in a german forum that there is space left at the right hinge.
A wireless coax cable should fit there.

CF is CF Sven, it's a standard, like PC card or IDE.

If it works in a CF slot and you can get the drivers for it, it will work in the CF slot of the X20. At least that's been my experience with my Transnote.

It's mostly the drivers and/or support by Win XP I'm unlear about. I haven't done a lot of research on this, but maybe someone has tried it already and can recommend a specific card.

Do you know anything about the minipci restriction?

Newer Thinkpads can't be equippped with standard cards,
and the original IBM cards are quite expensive.

I opened my X20
and I found enough space in the display assembly.
i messured the space between the panel and the case.
My antennas are arriving next week hopefully.
I surely will report!

I had success using an ActionTec wireless card in the X20. The X23 drivers worked with no problems. It works fine as-is (without antennas), but of course the signal strength is weak.

Regarding the antennas, I have some on order that will arrive next week.

How is the power cunsumption?
I tried an Intel 2200BG and the X20 used as twice as much power than without, even when I deactivated the card in the Device-Manager, , my Battery-time fell from ~3 hours to 1.5 hours.

I tried both the 8.x and 9.x Intel drivers...

Good question!

I'll check keep an eye on what type of battery life I'm getting now and let you know later in the week.

Has there been any kind of update on this? I am contemplating adding an internal wireless card to my newly aquired X20, but if the battery/power consumption more than doubles, I might stick with a PCMCIA card.

Looking at the display case, it looks like there should be enough room for the internal antenna.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'd like an update, too. I'm thinking of trying to install antennas in my x30 (model 2672-42U), which doesn't have them preinstalled. I've been using a 3Com x-jack cardbus. It works pretty well, but it'd be nice to have everything routed internally.

Is this worth doing? Does it increase power consumption significantly?
