Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala on X40

#1 Post by mikeh » Fri Oct 30, 2009 9:13 pm

I have just tried the new Ubuntu release on the X40.
Its looking very nice, though not as bug-free initially as some earlier releases. I suppose the chipset is getting old, so not getting as much beta testing as before.

After resume from suspend, the backlight does not come on.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/417599
And Xv (video accel) does not work. But there is now a simple fix in the release notes that covers both:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KarmicKoala/Rel ... with%20KMS

Also, hibernate is broken for me. No fix yet trhat I found, but I normally just use suspend anyway.

On the plus side, dynamic screen resizing works well. Plug in an external monitor or TV, hit Fn-F7, and
it will resize to the correct resolution for the external monitor. Or you can mirror the screen to external monitor.

GLX and compiz work well, so you can have all the nice eye-candy. Enough to make anyone still running XP turn green with envy.

edit: compiz is not working now. Not sure if something broke, or if I was mixed up before. Compiz worked fine with Jaunty.

I just installed it on my X41T and here's my initial impressions:

1. It boots far faster than Windows 7 which is very impressive.
2. Launching applications such as firefox and openoffice are very speedy. Much quicker than I thought they would be.
3. Nautilus hides the desktop icons by default. This is annoying.
3. For some reason I cannot configure window colors, some google-fu will clear this up.

I have not tested suspend but will do after I make this post.

I also noticed my swap is set to 480MB. This is way too small. I will be wiping Windows 7 RC and loading Ubuntu 9.10 and getting rid of my dual boot system. Then I will set the swap to 3GB. After that I will be able to test hibernate functions.

Ok so suspend worked fine from the menu, but not from closing the lid.

Are there any Thinkpad specific packages I need to install?

Just a shot in the dark here, I have not yet tried 9.10 out, but isn't there a power management setting somewhere that you use to choose what happens when you close the lid? The last Linux I used was Fedora 10, and it had such settings. "Do nothing" was the default setting, but when changed to "suspend", it worked fine. Maybe Ubuntu is the same.

Ok so suspend is now not working in any fashion.

Once I redo the partitions on my laptop I'll look into this issue further. The first stop will be the Ubuntu forums to check out what the community over there has to say about it.

No, none needed. The standard kernel does all the thinkpad hardware. See /proc/acpi/ibm .
There was the 'tp_smapi' module, which had some use, e.g. for limiting battery charge.

I have an update on the suspend issue.

I googled "Ubuntu 9.10 susped" and came across the following web page:

http://groups.google.com/group/UbuntuMi ... 7f24?pli=1

Someone mentioned having an SD card mounted and unmounting it before suspending the system.

I tested this out and it now works from both the menu and from closing the list. Here is what I tested:

1. Right click on the SD card and click unmount, but leave card in.
1a. Select suspend from the user menu in the upper right hand corner
1b. hit power button to resume - worked fine
1c. Repeat step 1 then close laptop lid

2. Right click on the SD card and select unmount, then remove card from system.
2a. followed steps 1a-1c and everything is good so far.

I have not rebooted the machine but will do so at a later time and report back with results.

Hello,

to solve xv video and suspend problems, just disable intel KMS on boot:

"sudo vi /etc/default/grub"
edit line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and add "nomodeset" to it.
run "sudo update-grub", reboot.

Problem solved :-)

Bye

Yes. It is in the release notes, as mentioned.

Hello

I have the same issue as some of the guys above - when trying to hibernate/suspend, I get a blinking _ symbol for more than 10 minutes and nothing changes. I read some people report this could be due to swap part being too small. Mine is round 500 Mb. Pls, everyone that reported hibernate working, to share the size of their swap partition...
Thank you :):)

Edit: It appears all the problems are caused by the SD Card.Removing it solves the problem.

You may find sometimes that 500MB is not enough to hibernate - e.g. lots of apps open.
But you don't need swap to suspend.
