Completely dead X31. Won`t work, charge up.

#1 Post by Gangster » Sat Nov 21, 2009 10:45 am

NOT WORKING WON'T CHARGE UP was working fine just stopped charging after being left for a few months.
Wont work on DC, Battery, Battery + DC. When I connect to power nothing happened. Even diode LED on PCB no work. I was check all fuse on PCB. All ok. I suspect ADP3806 but this Laptop don`t start on DC as well.
Look like completely dead.
Any idea how to check what's wrong with this laptop?

Check the AC adapter for +16vDC on the center pin

My X32 had the same episode too. I had to charge the battery with an external charger for a few hours, put it back it, then the computer worked fine.

I will check today. I hope it will work. But why this laptop doesn't work only on AC adapter?

I have no idea. I thought I was scratched one X32. A two battery charger is a handy accessory to have.

If you are electronic handy, then look for loose inductors or blown fuses.

I check all fuses:
F11, F16, F3, F15, F17 etc.
Which elements i have to check for loose inductor?

Make sure they are not loose. Look for solder cracks.

Solder should be ok. I check very close and its look OK. I check first pin (VCC) on ADP3806 and its 16V.
Any more ideas?
How check TCP8014 (Q85 and Q13). Can this 2 make this problems?
On pin 1, 2, 3 (Q85) and pin 5, 6, 7, 8 (Q13) voltage "jumping" from 120mV to over 300mv after that to 1,2V then 0 and again from 120.
That mean this Q85 is faulty?

No more suggestion?

Hi. Its update.
I already check U49 (MAX1845) and looks strange. Only on pin 4 is 16V. All rest is 0.0V Looks strange?

If you look at this on an oscilloscope, it will look like waveform.

Then witch device (integrated circuit) i need check. What voltage on which leg should be?
Which chip make (VCC5M) because I do not have one.
I think its MAX1631AEAI (VR2) because on leg 7 and 28 is voltage but on leg 17 should be 5V to CDRH124B_6R8MCI but is 0V.
On leg (MAX1631) 7 and 28 is 1.6V from U3 (IBM chip) leg 76 and 43.

This is MAX1631 voltage on each pins:

Code: Select all

MAX1631:
1pin - 0.0V
2pin - 0.0V
3pin - 0.0V
4pin - 5.02V
5pin - 0.0V
6pin - 4.96V
7pin - 1.635V
8pin - 0.0V
9pin - 15.1mV
10pin - 0.0V
11pin - 0.0V
12pin - 0.0V
13pin - 0.0V
14pin - 0.0V
15pin - around 30mV (jumping)
16pin - 0.0V
17pin - 0.0V
18pin - 4.64V
19pin - 5.02V
20pin - 0.0V
21pin - 5.02V
22pin - 16.10V
23pin - 3.333V
24pin - 5.02V
25pin - 4.64V
26pin - 0.0V
27pin - 0.0V
28pin - 1.629V

My son's X31 won't charge batteries, but otherwise works. Where can I find details of the charging circuit fuses, as the fruit juice that he poured into it (now cleaned) has possibly blown one.
Thanks, Keith
