How to do a proper case cleaning?

#1 Post by Tasurinchi » Sat Nov 28, 2009 4:48 pm

Hi Thinkpaders

My question is actually not necessary relevant for X-Series only, but as I want to start with my X31 I put my question here.

How can I get a proper cleaning for used or heavy used cases? Which materials are the best for cleaning? Is is possible to fix strong scratches?

My X31 has some marks on the screen's cover lid, the rest does look pretty ok. But I was eyeing a used T40 which was (cosmetic wise) in very bad shape and so the question came to my mind.

I have seen that there are skins for pimping up notebooks, this could be a solution to hide some scratches, but would be also possible to paint a case? (without negatively impacting on the notebook's normal function, of course).

Can shiny keys get cleaned or is a keyboard change the only solution?

Thanks in advance!

For the lid, the best thing I have found is Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, soaked in the hottest water you can stand. Wring out 'some' excess water so that it does not drip into the machine, and wipe the entire lid in straight lines, going over the scratched area a wipe or two more. Make sure the entire lid is wet. Right away take an absorbent rag (like a cotton cloth) and wipe dry the entire surface. Then let it air dry. You will be shocked and amazed.

I've never used the Mr. Clean eraser so I can't comment on Harry's tip.

However I have one of those picks up any kind of dirt type cloths. It's kind of like a sham-wow but with a soft terry cloth like feel to it.

I use that cloth and LCD cleaner on the entire machine. When I am done everything looks perfect.

As far as keyboard shine goes the shine comes from the surface being worn smooth over the years. The only way to fix it is to replace the individual key caps or the whole keyboard with new parts.

I too have an X31 and have not tried Harryc's solution (it sounds great), but have had good results for exterior cleaning with Simple Green, a Biodegradable, Non-Toxic, Non-Flammable, Non-Abrasive all purpose liquid cleaner.

For cleaning the LCD I use 70% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol and a 3M Microfiber Lens cleaning cloth (clean soft cotton cloth works ok but may leave slight fibers behind).

EDIT: heard from an optometrist (eye doctor) to NEVER clean lenses with a product made from wood (e.g. paper towels, toilet paper, tissue) because wood products have a high potential to scratch!

The KB question was answered although I've found a very good cleaning with Simple Green sometimes removes enough 'grime' to improve its overall appearance!
