CPU upgrade for X30 (Is it Possible?)

#1 Post by phaxmohdem » Wed Dec 09, 2009 4:20 pm

I was just wondering if it was possible to swap out the Pentium IIIm 1.2GHz CPU in my X30 for a low end Pentium M. I bought a 1.7 Dothan chip for my T40p, and if that works out, I'll have a spare 1.6GHz Banias just laying around.

My gut feeling is no, since the X30 is PC133 RAM, not DDR, but I figured someone might have a tip to squeeze some extra performance out of it.

a) the CPUs are not compatible
b) the CPUs on the X series are soldered to the board so cannot be upgraded without swapping the entire board
c) the 1.2GHz P-III is the fastest CPU available for an X30
d) it may be possible (I think should be possible) to swap a full system board from an X31/X32 into an X30, if you ever want to go that route

The CPU on all the X-series are soldered on the motherboard so definately no. Even if they werent, the P-M and P-IIIm use different chipsets so that wouldnt work either.

Ah you beat me to it dr_st

The best way to speed up performance IMHO would be to upgrade the 4200 rpm hardrive to a faster 5400 rpm drive. It definately sped up my X30, especially on bootups.

Thanks for the replies. I've been mulling over the possibility of dropping a 5400 RPM drive into it, or possibly even trying to find a 7200 RPM IDE drive second hand. (I saw a few 60GB Hitachi's on Fleabay). I guess finding 1GB of RAM for it would help as well.
