X31 Beep Codes

#1 Post by geek0 » Sat Feb 20, 2010 2:52 am

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forums great to see that one exists!

I was just wondering about the BIOS Beep Codes and their accuracy. I recently bought a used X31 which looks like it's in decent shape but when I power it up, it beeps 1 long beep followed by 2 short and I have a blank screen.

Power is getting to the board. When I take the memory module out, I get 1 short, 3 short, 3 short, 1 short.

I didn't know who wrote the BIOS originally so when I searched the 'net, I found all different BIOS companies and they all point to bad video. Since the video is integrated the next thing I did was borrow my brother's T42 and boot into it's BIOS. It's made by IBM.

The IBM Beep Code chart also indicates a possible video issue but it also indicates LCD assembly and/or system board. I'm hoping it's not the system board!

This model is a 2885 PWU. Thanks in advance for any input at all. ---- geek0

Welcome to the forum!

Try hooking it up to an external monitor and see whether it displays anything.

from the Hardware Maintainance Manual p.68

One long and two short beeps,
and a blank or unreadable
LCD.
1. System board.
2. LCD assembly.
3. DIMM.

the HMM is available from IBM

the way up and the way down are the same (heraclitus)

Thanks so much for the welcome and the pointers.

I'll download the HMM and try rebuilding the LCD Assembly. I already switched the DIMM module.

I'll let everyone know what happens!

Cheers,

I was hoping, for your sake, that it might have been a simple re-insertion of the ZIF socket for the LCD assembly, but if the external monitor is showing nothing and you're still getting beeps ... sounds like the system board is bad.

Hi Everyone,

I tried reseating the LCD ribbon cable ZIF socket to the board from the LCD assembly. Same results. Looks like a bad motherboard folks!

It's ok I found another board for a great price. As soon as it comes in, I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

In the end I will have an X31 complete with 1.6Ghz PM processor 1Gb RAM, 40Gb HD. Have been exploring the use of a 32Gb CF card to boot from. Eventually, a Solid State Drive would be nice. I've seen them on YouTube. They boot crazy fast into Windows XP, just really expensive right now.

I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks again for all the tips.

Ok Everyone,

I replaced the system board and everything works fine. So it was the main board then.

Thanks for all your input. I actually got a board with a 1.6 in it instead of a 1.4 so I'm happy.

Take care!
