In what respect?

Ram will max out at 2GB (although BIOS will show 2.5).

You can't upgrade the CPU without changing the motherboard.

You can upgrade to a wireless "n" card with some hacking.

And, as for the HD/SSD/whatever...there's a half a zillion threads detailng the options, I'll stay quiet since I'm really not an expert on these matters.

Although I'm not an "expert", I have an X41 that's been "breathed on" a little, so I'll weigh in with my experiences.

The machine was a little sluggish at first with a 80Gb ZIF style drive designed for iPods. Despite the higher areal density, it always "felt" slow, especially when loading an app. The RAM is maxed out so there was nothing to be gained there. I'm not using a N WiFi, so I wasn't going there anyway. All this was in comparison to my T42 (which was what I was using at the time) with 1Gb of RAM, similar WiFi card, but 5400rpm drive. It was sluggish enough for me to use Chrome as my primary browser on it vs. Firefox on all my other non-PIII (children's) machines.

In the end, I was able to get a small SSD (32Gb) from my brother which made the thing at least competitive with my other machines and motivated me to move back to using Firefox.

In a nutshell, I think it's a great Netbook alternative if you can get it running fast enough for it not to annoy. The RAM is cheap to do, and with the price of the smaller SSDs dropping, the price of it might not be out of line with its capabilities. And let me just say that it's an outstanding travel computer! You just can't get anything that small and light w/o having to either give up capability or $$$.
