X41 will not HIBERNATE using WIN7

#1 Post by scarr2k » Sun Mar 07, 2010 9:44 pm

I have an X41, running windows 7 professional, with a SSD drive. Everything works great and it runs quite well. My only issue is that I cannot get the laptop to go into hibernation. It will go into sleep mode but not hibernate. I have installed all recent drivers and I have even tried enabling Hibernation via the command prompt as suggested in another post. I have the option for Hibernate but when I select it, the screen goes black and the hard drive lite runs along with the wifi light but it never actually goes into hibernate. If you touch the track point the screen brightens and your presented with a login screen.

I had hibernate working with XP so I'm fairly sure this laptop will hibernate but wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions on what to try. Thanks in advance.

Any question or exclamation mark in device manager?

Are you sure you have enough spare SSID capacity in hand to accomodate the hibernation file? It must be greater than the installed system memory (as far as I know)

Yes, I have approx 30+ GB on my SSD, so space is not an issue. I have spent quite some time researching this and cannot seem to find the problem. At a loss. :(

**Sorry, I didn't answer the other posts, no exclamation marks in device manager.

Was it a clean install or an upgrade...?

I do have Win 7 installed on one of my desktop disks, but I'm still using XP on a day to day basis - just firing up Win 7 every couple of weeks or so to keep it up to date. To be honest, the control and admin features have been so much changed, regrouped, and buried, that I haven't yet found the patience to try and dig out, and familiarise myself, with the bits I believe essential for optimising the system.

But having just fired up Win 7, I find the shut down options offered include 'sleep', but not 'hibernate'. Having then found the advanced power setup dialogue, the hibernate option is set to 'on'. Sooo ..... your query, to which I tried to offer a helpful pointer, has left me with a problem of my own (but that aint your fault!) so I'm now going to turn off the Win 7 disk, keep an eye on this thread, and refuse to worry about it until I have to!

Although .................. p'rhaps I should try installing Win 7 on my X31 and see what it does. I'll think about it.

Have you tried querying Microsoft directly? They can be quite helpful, without demanding money, for this sort of problem (ie: it doesn't just look like it's finger trouble)

Sorry 'bout that.

Clean install of WIN7 Pro 32 bit. And I do have the hibernate option but it just goes to a black screen and never actually hibernates. If you touch the mouse the screen comes back up with the login. I checked and I do have a hibernate .sys file on my C drive.

I just tried hibernating on an X41T with Win7 HP and it worked fine.

Would you post your device list (e.g. using devcon), and check the event viewer and see if there's any relevant information...?

I have never used devcon but hopefully this worked. I printed out a text file using the following command: devcon find * (Lists device instances of all devices that are present on the local computer.) Do you see anything?

Thanks!

I just would like to figure out why mine will not. My x41 used to hibernate using XP but for some reason its not playing well with Win7 and hibernation. And again I have the option to hibernate it just will not go into that state. Thanks.

devcon drivernodes * could be more helpful. But you may like to post the results in a separate file so the thread is kept short.

And I don't seem to see the graphics driver listed...? Have you downloaded it from Windows Update...?

Another wild guess - There's an utility which doesn't work so well with Windows 7.

A straightforward, but not so effortless solution, is to do a bare install again, test hibernate, install a driver, test hibernate, install the next driver, and see what's the culprit.

P.S. Do you have a virtual optical drive installed? If yes, I would try uninstalling that one first and see if it helps.

Thanks to loyukfai.

You were right: I had Hybrid sleep selected.

Disabled that and the Hibernate option dutifully appeared in the shutdown options

I'm having pretty much the same issue (albeit only about 50% of the time) on my X41T with Win7 Pro. Screen fades to black, hard drive light lights up constantly (like it usually does right before the standby light starts blinking, indicating that hibernate is in progress), and then it just goes dark. The WiFi LED still lights up every now and then, but that's it. The machine is unpingable (both via WiFi and Ethernet), but it's still on.

If I leave it long enough (like over night) it'll turn off, and when I start it back up, it'll show me the "Windows didn't shut down properly..." options screen at boot.

Any bright ideas? Standby is working reliably.

Re: X41 will not HIBERNATE using WIN7

What kind of drive is in it? SSD or HD? The reason is that I have seen HD's set for a spin-down after so many minutes to conserve power. When the system is then asked to hibernate during this power-saving spin-down, it exhibits the same scenario.

Just a thought.

It's an SSD. I'll turn off the spin-down (setting it to a few hours in Power Manager should be fine, right?) and try it... maybe it's having problems because the SSD misunderstands the spin-down command?

It's a Solidata M2 32GB, in case that makes a difference...

-edit- Spin Down is already set to 30 minutes when on AC (all testing was done on AC so far)... so it's not the culprit.

Hmmm... I still think that it may be a function of the SSD/HD. I would totally turn off all power management function to that drive since it makes no sense to have it *spin down*. With or without this issue, I would NOT have any HD power management with an SSD.
Thanks!

Are there any other power management settings notorious for causing SSD based systems to hang when powering down?

I've also just noticed that my issue is worse than the OP's, as I can't get the device to respond at all once the screen's gone black. Have to do a hard shutdosn every time :(

There probably are... That would be something to search for!

My theory behind hangs like this is to :

1. Backup all data to the cloud - DropBox, etc
2. Slim down the drive to the basics
3. Re-format and re-install Win7 on a clean partition
4. Test

This will let you know immediately if it is the box or the software.
Thanks!

I've already tried cloning the setup from the SSD onto the original 40gb HDD, but that setup exhibited the same synptoms - when going into sleep mode. Didn't have much time to test though, so I slapped the SSD back in before going about my workday. I'll try a fresh install on the SSD this weekend if I have time.

Thanks for your help so far!

Just found this thread with a similar behavior of win7 prof on an X61 (could not hibernate). I located the problem insofar, my system uses also "vgasave"-driver as yours (because a ressource conflikt with the integrated grafics). And Windows 7 is not able to hibernate with this driver. Still trying to fix it. (WindowsXP works fine)

Uninstall or at least close both Dropbox and Firefox 4. Still hanging?
