Just got a x41t had a few questions

#1 Post by bobstone » Mon Mar 22, 2010 4:59 pm

hey all, just got the x41t 1866-EG3 1.6 cpu 1.5 ram and a 60 gig hdd.

had a few questions.

1st. it seems that it I want to get a SSD I should either get the kingspec or the lenovo one.
- with the lenovo one I will not get a bios error on start, with the kingspec I will.
- while browsing the site I want to say I saw reference to a custom bios that someone on the board made that will negate
the bios error with the kingspec. can someone confirm that with me cause I can no longer find that thread.
- did I miss any SSD that is better priced or signifntly faster that will also fit ?

2nd. everyone seems to be making a big deal about cloning the drive, is there a reason for this.
- so if I get a new ssd can I just install any OS with my ext usb dvd drive?
- if not, how come, and would there be a problem installing a new OS to the original drive?

3rd. lastly is there a thread that talks about all the drivers I will need for a windows 7 install and for a linux / debian install.

Thanks for any help.

also would this kingspec work ?

http://www.kingspec.com/solid-state-dis ... a-mlcj.htm

which looks like it has the side connector that is needed?

or would I need to get this model with a zif to pata adapter?

http://www.kingspec.com/solid-state-dis ... f-mlcs.htm

on the last model it mentions the smi or jbmicron, if I need to get one of these instead of the first one I should get the smi one right ?

Gosh I wish I could help you with your SSD questions, but I am still using the original 40GB HD in my X41t.

As far as hard drive cloning is concerned some people do it for backup purposes and other people do it because they don't want to reload Windows.

If I had an SSD I would do a fresh install. Mainly to eliminate any cruft in the system I may have missed during my monthly virus scans, uninstallls, registry cleanups and so on.

Other than that I just wanted to congratulate you on the selection of a fine computer. I really love my X41t. It's perfect for traveling, runs quick and cool and it's also a tablet. I've done some drawing and putzed around with OneNote. My trial for artrage expired but once I have $20 to spend I will be buying it, it is that good. Anyway good luck with your new system, may she serve you well.

AFIAK, the custom BIOS is actually an (very) early release which didn't yet have the HDD check with something like SLIC-what hacked in. I remember seeing one some time ago but seemed to be available for non-Tablet X41 only.

Cheers.
