T40 to X40?

#1 Post by LeoB » Sun Mar 06, 2005 6:10 pm

I have a T40 that has been a real workhorse. It works fine -- but I've been hankering after something even slimmer and smaller to take while traveling.

Is the X40 (or X31) really all that smaller? I've never actually seen one, just read all the specs. I've also seen widely varying weights given for them, from something like 2.6 pounds up to 4 pounds.

I am used to smaller screens (I had a couple small Sonys), so that's not the problem. Just wondering if it would be worth trying to switch...or, more likely, add on as I don't think I'd get rid of the T40.

Anybody made that switch?

Thanks,
Leo

I have made the switch, over time, the other way: From 240X to X22 to A22e to T23 to T30 to (now) T41. I lived for a while without an onboard CD drive and it was a pain enough times to bother me. Now that I have lived with larger machines with onboard CD drive, I find it is the best for me. I find the T41 slim enough and light enough for travelling, but powerful enough and flexible enough to handle any situation except for the odd time when a floppy drive would be handy. I don't carry that around. ... JD Hurst

I own an x40; never owned a T4x, but I have friends with T41-42, and we often end up working laptop side by side, and exchanging them.

next to each other the T looks like a momoth and the X looks so much nicer. for travel or just the commute its a huge difference in size. the x40 is super slim and light and has a very nice keyboard and screen.

in my view, one rarely need CDs on a daily basis, with wireless internet or USB memory being used to transfer most files around these days. i have the docking station for that rare CD install.

I think its a no brainer!

I had a T-40 and it was stolen... now I have the x40... If you want it to use while TRAVELING the X40 is WAY better. The size difference seems huge and when using the x40 on an airplane it just fits a lot better on the pull down trays... This is especially apparent when the person in front of you relined their seat. With the T40 sometime I couldn't have the angle such that the screen was tilted back far enough to see well.. felt cramped.. this is not the case with the X40. Not as much real estate on the x40 screen so that is one point for the T40, but the x40 is just way better for traveling. I have a very small bag (photo posted somewhere on here) and I really love the light weight.

I understand what you mean..
I recently upgraded from an X40 to a T41P...
If it wasn't for the integrated video card, I would have stuck with the X40. I just love its design.. small, light, slim and IBMs trademark quality...

To cut to the point though... The X40 is A LOT smaller than the T40s..
Try looking around the forum...
I remember someone posted pictures comparing the X40, a 14" T series and a 15" T series b4...

If you dont want to sacrifice much when switching I would suggest going for a X31. It feels (and is) smaller than the T40, but in the process has pretty much all of the T40 benefits, minus an optical drive. The discrete video and ability to use a 7200 drive make it MUCH faster than an X40, and at least in my eyes (I own all 3) it has far better quality than the other two, it just feels more solid. That said, the X40 is tiny, so if you want the absolutely smallest on go for the X40.

The missing rom drive is not that big a deal, at least IMO, as it's easy to use an emulation program like Alcohol 120% for example to eliminate the need to carry the rom drive and cd's around on a daily basis. And yea, it's a big difference. Much smaller notebook means you can use a much smaller case/bag as well!

I did both. My main computer is a T42p. I also have an X40, which I keep synced to my T42. On long trips (a couple of weeks), I take the T42. For short trips, the X40.

I agree with most of the comments here. The one point that has not been made is that the X40 is WAAAAAAAAAY slower than the T42.

How does a X40 compare with a T40 1.3GHz ?

I went from a T40 1.6 installed a 7k60 didn't care for it (the 7k60 that is)
Now using an X40 and I would say yes it is slower but not WAAAAAAAAAY slower.

My T42p is a 2.0 Ghz chip with 1GB ram and a 7200 RPM, 60GB hard drive. In comparison to my T42p, the X40 is truly WAAAAAAAAAY slower, especially hard drive access.

Well I gues it is all subjective. Cause I had the 7200 rpm HD in my T40 for a while and wasn't that impressed.

The X40 is a great machine. I got my sister one for college and she loves it. It's so small and easy to carry around, but also built VERY well. I think it's far sturdier than the T4x series and more in-line with my T30. However, it's not a powerhouse.

She uses Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Mozilla, and that's about it, and for those needs it is fine. But, if she were trying to play crazy fast 3-D games and whatnot it would be too slow, but for the most part a business person doing primarily business things should be more than happy with the performance.

But, be ready to make more friends when traveling. I've yet to see someone look at the X40 and not say, "wow, that's a really cool looking computer."

In no way do I question you, but I started with the 7200rpm drive in my old T30 and now in my T41. The difference is as stark as high noon to midnight. I can see the value of the X series, but you would have to pull me kicking and screaming from my 7200 rpm. Bring on a 10K rpm drive and I'll be in seventh heaven :) ... JD Hurst
