Largest size TV / Monitor for X40?
Largest size TV / Monitor for X40?
I want to plug my X40 to my TV using the VGA plug. I tried it but I think it way too big, its a 37" Viewsonic (N3760w) 1080i HD LCD. The VGA/PC output is listed at: 1360 x 768 @ 60Hz, lower resolutions also listed. I got a no signal on it, any chance of tweaking it to work ? Would using an HDMI cable make a difference ?
I found this thread and it seems to say that they plugged a 24" Dell LCD, at 1920 x 1200.

Is this the max it can handle ? Seems kinda low for a laptop with 64MB video, since i was previously plugging in my old Apple Powerbook (Pismo) with only 8MB of video on my 1440 x 900 widescreen.

Re: Largest size TV / Monitor for X40?
You will have to set your X40 external monitor resolution to 1360 x 768 @ 60Hz. I'm not sure that the Thinkpad graphics driver has that option. If not you will have to use a different driver, or use an application like PwerStrip to add the resolution to your driver.

Re: Largest size TV / Monitor for X40?
Since X40 has no DVI output, using VGA port would give poor result and difficult to set resolution in WindowsXP.
The easiest way to deal with this is by using an USB graphics adapter like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0436643031
I used a DVI-D to DVI-D adapter instead of a cable and it results in a pretty clean setup. Monitor EDID data works and setup then become pretty straight forward.
There are a number of adapter suppliers on eBay and most use video chipsets from this company:

Pretty good technology.

Re: Largest size TV / Monitor for X40?
According to the Viewsonic tech page ( http://www.viewsonic.com/products/n3760w.htm ), it says I can change it to 1024 x 768. Just that it is not the native resolution. I have to go and find my original remote or read through the manual more carefully on how to set the TV resolutions to the same 1024 x 768 as the X40. I've been using the cable box remote and don't know where I have the original.
I will post results of what happened. Hopefully this works, if not I will try one of the options listed here.

1366x768 is normally the native resolution of 1080i/720p TVs. Viewsonic does have monitor driver for their TVs and you can give that a try.

You... do know that the size of the monitor/television doesn't matter AT ALL, right? People just use that as a reference point as different sizes tend to have common resolutions. But a 1080p or 1080i television, be it a small 20" or a huge 60", will have the same resolution and exact same connectivity capability with a given laptop.

Re: Largest size TV / Monitor for X40?
---Yeah, I understand the part about the screen size vs. resolution. I had wondered about my Living room TV because it is a 1080i monitor and my PC monitor only goes up to 720p and did not have a High Definition sticker when i bought it. And since I'm not a gamer, I didn't worry about response time.Bibin wrote:You... do know that the size of the monitor/television doesn't matter AT ALL, right? I tried one or two more times, but did not get it to work in Windows XP. I did get it to work finally, but only under Xubuntu 10.04 (and Puppy Linux 5 ). When I booted in Xubuntu, it took a second or so and then found the resolution fine. The Intel video chip it too slow for playing video, but works fine for other stuff and some basic websites.

Re: Largest size TV / Monitor for X40?
1080i doesn't mean the native resolution is 1920x1080. Likely it will be 1280x720 (1366x768 native). You have to check the TV datasheet. I have one of those 1080i TV that is native 1366x768.
WindowsXP only have mostly 4:3 resolutions without a monitor driver. WindowsXP MCE have EDID driven 16:9 resolutions but using Windows7 is probably easiest today.

Re: Largest size TV / Monitor for X40?
I just connected my X40 to my 1366x768 LCD TV (LG) and it recognized it as PnP monitor just fine with correct resolution. It was through VGA connector. I'm using standard video drivers from IBM website. OS is XP SP3.
