X3 Ultrabase Release Lever Doesn't Work

#1 Post by ParatoOptimal » Tue Sep 21, 2010 2:41 am

The lever doesn't seem to be connected to anything nor the posts that push the X31 off the X3.

The X3 Ultrabase I purchased on this forum this Summer seems to be broken. It worked/released once when I first go it. Since then I've tried to disengage it twice with no success. I had to use the string trick to release it.

Below where "IBM" is printed on the top of the base, directly above the lever, there appears to be a pressure mark where some mechanical part of the lever pushes a pin such as a flat nail head UP. The lever seems to move nothing now nor the pin that left that mark. The posts that are supposed to push up on either side of where the computer elcetronically connects to the base don't push up to push the laptop off the base.

I just purchased another X31 with X3 Ultrabase from this forum that doesn't have the pressure mark from any "pin" but does have the two blocks that push the laptop up, off the base funcitioning properly.

Googling finds reference to a German site with directions on fixing the X3 Ultrabase. That post is from 2008 and no longer there.

Any help on opening/fixing my X3 Ultrabase would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

p.s.
CD/DVD-ROM in the broken one seems to be a LOT noisier than the CD-RW/DVD-ROM in the base that works. I'm just trying to watch a DVD in the new one. I'm not sure if the volume was down in WMP but I know the volume on the X31 was as high as possible and I think the new, working one sounds better and louder than the broken one.

removal of all visible screws is not enough: one is hidden under that
plastic stickon that says "IBM"--about two inches in from the IBM logo,
toward the front.

the problem I found was, that a small metal pin (about 4mm dia, about
6mm long) had fallen out of the main actuating lever--the replacement
got epoxied in, it was cut down from a suitable stainless bolt.
the way up and the way down are the same (heraclitus)

Thanks tom lightbody. I don't hear a pin rolling around in side. The lever doesn't appear to be connected to anything except of course that I can't pull it out. I'll give it a try. Any tips on the size, thread of the bolt or where/how I could cut it or get it cut?
Thanks
