Change screen of x40??? Is it possible?

#1 Post by deckoff » Sat Oct 23, 2010 2:12 pm

Hello!
I own a thinkpad x40 which is with broken screen, but otherwise in perfect condition. I bought in for a few bucks, because..
I have x40 which I use every day, new battery, 32BG SSD, new power charger. But it has been heavily used... So, what I want to know is - can I change the screen(lid) of laptop 1 with the lid of laptop 2(the working one) Is it worth it, do I risk to damage both laptops, do you have a link how it is done, any recommendations how to do it....

Sure it's do-able, and not too difficult either. You will need to download the X40 Hardware Maintenance Manual and familiarize yourself with how it's put together and how each part is removed. Then just follow the step-by-step instructions in the manual.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Well, BIG thanx.
I mixed the two laptops, taking the better of each of them.
Both have the same type number 2731-H8g , but differ in the numbers after 354
S/N
the first is 99-VD311
the other 99-VD345
My question is - do they have exactly the same hardware?
I ask, because the audio speakers are much louder now, but go almost silent at 2-3 dots before mute?
I use Ubuntu 10.04, if that is relevant
Ant link to guides to serial and version numbers?

The serial number is irrelevant unless it's a CTO model. The (2) machines are the same.

Product: ThinkPad X40 2371-H8G [change]

Well, thank you
I asked the question above, because I see little differences in audio behavior, might it be the BIOS version difference?
I am pretty sure machine one was updated months ago, and now I use the machine two board(and BIOS)
