Move from x41 to .... which?

I currently am using an x41 which has served me quite well. I'm moving closer (will buy in the next 3 weeks) to buying its replacement...hoping for a speed advantage. Can someone direct me to a site or chart that compares all the Lenovo laptop and/or tablet models available, listing side by side comparisons of their features?

Also...moving from the x41 to .. say... the 700 series...how much speed advantage am I likely to see? Also...how will the video of the new machine compare with that of the x41?

I don't do CAD or graphics much...though I do a little Photoshop once in awhile. The main thing I need the speed for is to execute some currently slow...elaborate Wordperfect macros that manipulate variables in a large document.

If you enjoy the X41 size then I would recommend considering the X200/X201 series. Avoid the "s" version since it is a little light on processing power. Sorry I don't have a reference for side by side but the Lenovo site can get you close to that kind of comparisions. As for the 700 series...you are really stepping up in price and size. You might need a small wagon to carry one.

It really depends on your needs. If you're just going on the internet or typing up the occasional document, the quad cores offered on the W70x notebooks won't offer much of an advantage. Now if you code blu-rays all day, then go for a quad. For typical usage a SSD or a Momentus XT would be a more noticeable performance wise, offering faster boot times and quicker application launch times. While low voltage CPUs don't offer as much processing power, they're fine for most usage. They do offer other benefits as well. I found the fan on my X200 was more noisy than my X200t, which has a LV CPU.

Yes...the LV processor if totally quiet. Just a little slow for my everyday needs.

An X100e is another option. I went from an X22 to an X40 to an X60s to the X100e. I wouldn't go back. The X100e has everything I need in a travel machine except ultra-long battery life. I get about 1.5 - 2 hours with the 3 cell and about 4 - 4.5 with the 6 cell, I bring both along for long flights. It has a powerful sound chip, so listening to music/movies on a plane isn't an issue (as it is on an X40, X60s, etc.) All X100e's have webcams.

Prices start very low for either available dual core model (the single core MV-40 is not recommended), often around $300 in the Lenovo Outlet. However, with a WiMax adapter, WWAN adapter, Bluetooth, 4GB of RAM and an SSD, mine is up to about $750. But it is fast and connects to pretty much anything available.

You might be able to configure an X201 the same way, but it will cost at least twice as much. (However, it will also have a significant processor advantage!)

You should at least take a look at an X100e. (Even better would be the X100e's sister machine, an Edge 11, with the Intel CPU - not available in the U.S., yet.)

I guess the fan noise isn't a big deal. My hearing is lousy and getting worse.

I would like to move to a larger screen than the x41 because I do use the machine at home, where I don't have a large external monitor...as I do at the office.

I also want to move up in speed..but see no need to spend a lot of money on overkill. I'm looking at the 700 series. Are you saying the 201 will offer enough bang for the buck to make it a better choice?

Yes...the X201 is awsome. This month's Laptop Magazine rated in number one in one of their categories but also said it was spendy.

If you are looking for a really good value you might find a perfect X200 (not the s) with a three year warranty. I can go on about the merits of the X200...but for now it is my primary computer because it can do everything and it only weighs 3 lbs. I presently have mine equipped with 4 gb of memory, 500 gb hard drive, Windows 7 - 64 bit, P8700 2.53 GHz Core2Duo processor, and a Blu-Ray burner with UltraBase. I picked mine up on Craigslist for $450 including the three year warranty...and upgraded some goodies. It runs like a sports car and can get up to 4 hours on the standard battery.

I'm still trying to figure out a few things:

1. What's with all the alphabet soup? What's the difference between x, t, w, etc.?

2. What would I gain between the numerical model #'s?

200 series
400 series
500 series
700 series

If 200 series are so great..why are people buying the 500's??

I do like the finger-touch screen, which I think would speed up my work. The tablet with the swivel screen is nice, but I don't use it much.

I do want the larger screen...at least larger than the x41.

As to your other questions...spend a little time around the forum and some time on the Lenovo site. They do a good job explaining the tiers of ThinkPads. Owning an X200 ThinkPad is a little like Goldie-Locks. The X200 is "just right".
