Are Recovery CDs generic?

#1 Post by Tsuioku » Thu Mar 17, 2005 2:35 am

I deleted the recovery partition and had a clean install on my X40 w/o first making recovery cds thinking I wouldn't be needing them. I just got a T41P and I'm thinking about selling the X40 but people are asking if I have recovery cds... Which I don't... And I don't want to pay IBM for them..
Will Recovery CDs from a T41P would work on an X40?
IBM T43 2668-95U / ATI X300
Backup: IBM T41P 2373-GGU / ATI FireGL T2
SOLD: IBM X40 2371-8EU..

I don't think that would work because the machines are too different. Better, I think to purchase the recovery CD's from IBM. ... JD Hurst

yes the recovery cd's are generic and will generally work on different models . BUT, the X series is a little different. It may not work. If you try and it does please let us know.

I would just tell the tire kickers that most newer computers do not come with them any more. If their hard drive fails IBM will send recovery CDs with a new hard drive.

As for the recovery CDs they are all different. All of the different TPs have different hardware in them and the CDs for them have different drivers, etc...

Well, up to a point Len. They're generic across a model line, e.g. the recovery CDs for all T40 and T40p models are the same, same goes for all T41 and T41p models, etc.

But you're correct that each model line usually has their own release of recovery CDs.

But that's never stopped me from using, say, T23 XP recovery CDs on a T21 or 600X and then just installing the correct drivers that I've downloaded and burned to a CD.

I'm presently burning the recovery CDs from my new T42, Lord knows where they might wind up!

(For those who worry about such things, I have an MSDN subscription and still have around 30 unused XP licenses from that and other sources, including the original XP Beta NFRs.)
