X31 died!

#1 Post by DPHMIN » Thu Feb 10, 2011 11:37 am

My Thinkpad X31 quit suddenly on me this week. It was working fine, but I turned it on and there were 4 short beeps four times. This happened for several tries. I removed the memory and hdd. The beeping stopped, but it doesn't do anything but lights come on and the fan works.

I guess I need a new motherboard. Has anyone got any advice for me?

4 beeps is a security chip missing- it's on a small board in the lower left corner where IRDA/firewire port is. May want to try taking that board off, cleaning connector with alcohol and reinstalling it. This one caught me by surprise when I was testing mine and forgot to plug it in. Was completely sure I had memory problems until I looked at the Lenovo table of beeps :)

Thanks for the tip. I was traveling when you posted it, but recently returnded home. This morning, I followed your suggestion, and cleaned the connection with a Q-tip and alcohol. Put it back together, and it works!
