X31 requires DDR-PC2100 or DDR-PC2700.
Some DDR-PC3200 might work, but there is no guarantee.
DDR-PC3200 will not work in an X60s which requires DDR2-PC5300.

3200 officially came in DDR and DDR2.
There is very little of the DDR2 around, but its out there.

DDR has 200 pins
DDR2 has 240 pins, they are NOT interchangeable

If it fits in the laptop correctly, it should work. I have multiple sticks in my machines.

True but DDR2 '3200' is not called PC3200; it's PC2-3200 (or DDR2-400).

In most cases name-brand PC3200 should work fine in any machine requiring PC2700 or PC2100; it will just clock down to whatever speed the machine supports. In rare cases there might be a problem with the timings or just plain low-quality memory. (I have some no-name modules labeled 'PC3200' that actually only support 166 MHz in their SPD settings.)

PC3200 absolutely won't work (or fit) in an X60s.
Current Thinkpads:
X31, X40, X61T, X61, X201, X220 (i7 IPS), W520 (2720QM/2000M/FHD), T440p (i7-4800MQ/GF730GT/FHD)
Dells: Latitude C840, Precision M70, Precision M4400, M6400 (WUXGA), M6600, M6700
Daily driver: Dell XPS 13 w/Kaby Lake+Iris Pro+TB3

It's just that I'm finding PC2100 and PC2700 hard to come by and when I do find it, it's too expensive.
Some PC3200 seems more reasonably priced.

DDR2 memory for the X60s should be much cheaper than DDR for the X31 though; cheapest 1 GB DDR module on NewEgg is $32 and you can get a 2 GB DDR2 module for less than that. DDR3 is even cheaper.

About the best price I have seen on memory for the last 60 days
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

There is no significant difference in any of the first 3 brands, I have used/heard good things from all.
