X24 boot devices

#1 Post by Mack » Tue Mar 22, 2005 6:47 pm

Hi, I have a question regarding a possible buy of an IBM X24. (no docking station included) After some searching, it seems this model cannot boot from an external cd-rom, only from the cd in the docking-station. Am I correct? It seems to be the same for all X20-X24?

But then I found this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... t=x22+boot

User "roblim" says he can boot via an external cd-drive on a X22.

So what is true? Is it possible to boot X24 using an external cd-drive connected to one of the usb-ports, or a usb on a pcmcia-card converter in the cardbus slot?

Also, if using a usb2-pcmcia-card converter in the cardbus slot, will usb devices connected to this have power?

Thanks for any help!

AFAIK all of the X series machines will boot off just about any USB device.

Have a look: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... &loc=en_US

Config> USB

Indeed it should work to boot from usb connected cd-rom according to that bios simulation. Thank you James! :D

Really? I thought you just had to ensure that the USB port is enabled on the X20 and X21, as it's disabled by default, and you had to use an IBM USB CD drive.

A FDD is the only USB device for an X20.
