X20 - new install of XP SP0 has missing dll - will SP3 fix??

#1 Post by g8tzl » Sun May 01, 2011 6:37 pm

I have just done a new install of Windows XP Pro SP0 - the first ever version. I have used this version several times before with no problem - I then use Windows Update to obtain SP3.

When I was installing SP0, I got a "cannot copy cmprops.dll" message (as well as another dll which I did not note down). The CD drive seemed to have problems reading the disk. I clicked on "Ignore" (or something similar) as well as reinserted the XP SP0 CD and the install process continued.

I guess the cmprops.dll was not installed but XP SP0 seemed to run OK. I am now updating to SP3.

Does installing SP3 automatically add in any missing dll's from an earlier SP0 install?

You need to install XP-Pro SP2 (which includes SP1) first, before you install SP3!
SP3 is a stand-alone SP, and does not include any previous SPs (unlike W2K).

I am using Windows Update - custom option. As you say, it initially installed SP2 and then SP3.

Does SP2/SP3 replace any missing dll's from SP0?

Is SP2 actually a complete reinstall of XP?

I start with SP0 as my Product Key is for SP0.

I guess I could use SFC /scannow to check for missng dll's (as you suggested for the missing USB drivers on my X60). Will the SP0 install CD work if it finds missing dll's?

There is no SP0.
There's the basic XP-Pro (that you probably have), then came SP1, then SP2 (which included SP1 as well), finally SP3 standalone.
If your XP-Pro has missing DLLs, it could be a Release Candidate (RC) version.
X20 sounds a bit old for having a full XP, but I may be wrong.
It would probably run better on XP-FLP if you can find it.
SPs are never a full reinstall, just updates.
SFC should find anything missing, but if you have only the basic XP, it may not find stuff if SPs have been applied already, unless your install CD has been slipstreamed with those SPs.

I ran SFC /scannow.

I had to insert the "SP0" (original XP Corporate Edition CD) and the progress bar continued to progress across the screen. It reached the end and then disappeared. No mention of any problem. Is this correct?

The missing dll's was when I was originally installing XP - I got a message about "Cannot copy cmprops.dll" The CD drive was doing lots of revving. I tried clicking "Ignore" and also ejected/reinserted the CD. After that, the XP install process continued and finished. Either the cmprops.dll is still missing or maybe it got installed after I originally reinserted the XP CD or when I ran SFC /scannow??
