Installing SSD in an X41t
Installing SSD in an X41t
I have decided to keep my X41t and replaced it's hdd with an ssd. This will be my first experience with an ssd. Is the formatting and os install the same on an ssd as it is on a hdd? This will be a Lenovo 60gb drive FRU: 41W0736. Anyone know if the firmware will need updating? Thanks in advance for your help, Keith

Re: Installing SSD in an X41t
Hi Keith,
Formatting an SSD and installing an operating system and programs is pretty much the same as a HDD.
I have and regularly use an X41 Tablet.
As you know, the original 4200RPM hard drive was slow.
A few years ago I installed the 60GB SSD from IBM/Lenovo, made by Samsung.
It worked great for a while, but has slowed quite a bit.
I have run some disk clean up utilities with small bumps in performance.
The X41 and X41 Tablet are actually native SATA boards, with a SATA~PATA bridge to use PATA hard drives.
(Also the T43.)
Forum member Bibin and others have figured out how to by-pass or remove the SATA~PATA bridge and use the native SATA connection with modern SATA SSDs.

If you are running Windows XP, I would go with the Intel 80 or 160GB X18m Generation 2 drives, as they support a hardware maintenance utility similar to TRIM.
If you are running Windows 7, I think any SSD with the 1.8" form factor, and that is able to do TRIM, will work fine.
I'm considering the SATA upgrade...
Good health, Weogo

Re: Installing SSD in an X41t
Am currently running Win7 on this X41t. Does the Lenovo ssd support trim? Is trim native in Win7 or do I need to fetch it from somewhere?
Thanks again, Keith

Re: Installing SSD in an X41t
Hi Keith,
Some drives support TRIM, some don't.
I don't believe TRIM is an option on the old Samsung PATA drive.
Samsung may have a utility like TRIM that can be used with the drive, but I haven't seen it.
CCleaner from version 3.0 on has a utility called Drive Wipe.
It may or may not be effective.
I just ran it for the first time yesterday on my Samsung PATA drive.
Will have to use the X41T more to know how effective it is.
Thanks and good health, Weogo
