ThinkPad X201T Sets off Security barrier in libraries

#1 Post by cs09aas » Thu May 05, 2011 5:25 pm

Hi,

Just a quick question, for some reason my laptop is setting off the security barrier whenever I leave the library. It does this if I leave the laptop in sleep mode but also when I shut the laptop down completly.

Is there any way of stopping this all together? Does anyone know why this happens? Its getting a bit annyoing the security guards keep thinking i'm trying to steal books!

Hope you can help :-)

Possibly there's an RFID chip inside your machine.

Among other things, shops put them inside a pricey item, to stop it from being taken outside without paying.
They should be disabled/removed when the item is paid for. If not, who knows???

As far as im aware this doesn't have a RFID chip nor does it have anything from a shop as I got it direct from Lenovo.

It does have GPS,3G and WiFi, maybe they could be setting it off? Some people have also suggested its the touchscreen.. Could this be true? I Just want to stop it happening!

If your laptop is in a bag, you could put a sheet of thick alu-foil on each side of the laptop inside the bag.
Take 2 pieces of carton (same size as the laptop) and wrap that foil around it once or twice.
Then cover them in clear plastic foil to prevent them from scratching anything.
Put those in your laptop bag and transport the laptop between those sheets.
That should do it.

Thanks for the advice, its a bit of a big effort to do this all though. Would disabling all wireless radios using the switch on the side of the laptop along with shutting it down completly do the same job? If it comes to it i'll just make my own laptop case for it!

It's worth a shot, it seems like that's the only thing that could be doing it. Try taking out the battery after you shut it down.

Result! I shut down the laptop completly and removed the battery. It looks like the battery was still supplying the fingerprint reader and the screen.

Thanks for your advice guys, looks like I will be removing the battery quite a bit!
