There is no limit except for the fact that the largest laptop IDE 2.5" hard drive manufactured is 320GB.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm planning to get a SSD but can't find one with IDE interface here. But they still have 80 Gb and 320 Gb WD hard drive.

That's a MLC drive which I would stay away from...

I know its MLC, but for 200 US$ is really good price for a 250mbyte/s read/write. All other MLC have 80/60 mbytes/s. The SLC PATA starts at 400 until 1000 US$ :(

Colour me cynical but...

When something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I had several MLC drives on different ThinkPads and was very unimpressed.

Not to mention the fact that the 250Mb read/write would likely not fly on any PATA-era ThinkPad without major changes to the chipset/motherboard architecture which are unlikely to succeed even if they are theoretically possible...

I know I could not get 250mbyte/s in a X31, but I need to buy an SSD for 200 US$ and could not find another brand with good reviews and quality in this price range.

I hope to report back in 15 days with hdtune screenshots of before and after

IDE hard disk are more expensive than the SATA hard disk. I'm thinking of buying a SATA hard disk and put a SATA to IDE adapter on it. My only worry is will the hard disk protrude out when this is inserted. Has anyone tried it?

The adapter look like this

Your worry is well founded. It will not fit.
