Which keyboard FRU should I buy?

#1 Post by lakersgo » Mon May 23, 2011 6:26 am

Well, i've got a X41T (1867-J11) that has the TrackPoint middle button cap popped recently. The "hinge" on the cap is broken so I can't put it back in. Would it be ok to just replace one key instead of the entire keyboard?

According to this website: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 59985.html
if I want to get a US English keyboard, the FRU numbers are:

39T0806
replaces
91P8319

39T0868
replaces
93P4638

I don't understand why the 9XXXXX is being replaced by 3XXXXX, nor do I know any difference between the two. So the question is, if I do get a keyboard, what's the right FRU keyboard to buy?

Before I do that, I am just wondering what the convention is for the FRU number? I've since found other keyboard FRU from the user's guide. This is creating a bit of confusion now. Plus, if I buy individual keys, I need to make sure they do fit in my particular keyboard.

Take it out, the P/N is on the back of the KB.
The eBay sellers have parts for both types.
The 39T0806 is the (preferred) NMB keyboard, the 39T0868 is a Chicony KB (of lesser quality).
Never mind the replacements numbers, that's IBM/Lenovo for you.

As an example, there are T40/T41/T42 and T43 Thinkpads, that's 4 models, all of them in 14" size and 3 of those in 15" size.
Makes 7 models. They come in standard and 'P' versions, makes 14 models. There are over 100 different motherboards for these 14 models. Another idiosyncrasy.

Sometimes the PN and FRU are related, but much less so recently, not useful.

I've seen two keyboard brands for x41, different keys. The person in ON who sells keys has a good guide.

Beware there are variations of English if that is what you need, e.g. US vs Canada vs UK, I found p/ns confusing because of that.

I bought the individual key instead. The installation takes less than a min, fits perfectly.

Thanks to everyone who came to rescue!

Good move.
The person in Ontario who sells individual keys provides good service, helping you identify the type of key (by what it looks like underneath) and providing instructions (very helpful, as removal/installtion of some of the special keys is hard to figure out and it is easy to damage little tabs).

(Though his eBay ordering is not set up to order more than one key at at time.)
