Can someone suggest a particular 1.8" hdd?

#1 Post by Smokestoomuch » Wed Jun 22, 2011 6:50 pm

I'm putting together a second X41Tablet from parts, so I know these machines are especially sensitive to hard drive performance specs. However, I figure there to be possibly bigger and better stuff on the market by now.

What would be the best performing 1.8" pata drive greater than or equal to 60GB and costing less than $150. No SSD drives, please... I have enough problems already! :D Thank you.

You have a list of drives in my thread here.

In the meantime I have a Toshiba MK8025GAL and two Samsungs HS06THB. They work nice and are really silent. The latter could be found in Ebay for around 40 USD, I have the impression that the Toshiba has got more expensive lately, but maybe it's a "local" issue around here.

Good luck with your X41T, they're are really nice little machines... :thumbs-UP:

Yup, I did already find your list. It's a nice one.

I think #2 on your list is up on Ebay for 99 cent minimum bid. I'm going to try to snag that one.

At least on the Tablets, I can tell you that hdd performance will make or break the machine as far as usability. Poor performing 1.8" hdd's make a tablet absolutely unusable. They are a little sluggish even with a fast hdd (but acceptable).

Dunno about 1.8" But I got a 2.5" samsung spinwrite drive
and was blown away at the performance of it  .
Cost about $50 new on Ebay. Installed it in a T42 and
installed Win7 in about 15 minutes. Is a great performer.

2.5" models do not fit in X4x series, at least not with quite some modification and part of the drive sticking out of the case...

That model is not one of the newest, I'l rather look for HS06THB or HS082HB's, which I've seen getting cheaper en Ebay (at least here in Europe).

This one sounds interesting, it's more expensive but it's a 160GB model

Have any idea how well that 160GB model ponies up to the rest on your list. A huge disc that does not spin 5400 makes me a little leary. You can never underestimate the effect of a poor performing hdd inside a tablet.

The HS082HB is the one I'm trying to snag.

Almost all 1.8" drives run at 4200RPM (there are even some 3600RPM drives), the only exceptions are two 120GB Samsung models (HS122JC and other model# that I forgot), but they very pricey. Normally those Toshiba models ending with and "L" at the end are single platter models that should perform quite good. Although I haven't tested the 160GB one, but is on my "to do" list

I did consider mounting a 2.5" drive inside an X41T. I just couldn't do it. I figured there would be more hanging out of the machine than would be inside the machine. There just isn't any room for it.
