X31: Booting from USB stick

#1 Post by Benja » Thu Mar 31, 2005 2:10 pm

Hello

Is it possible to boot from an USB stick with a X31 (BIOS 2.15)

I have a bootable USB stick (at least I hope it is bootable) and I can not boot from it with my X31.
Unfortunately, I am not able to test, if the problem comes from the stick as my other computer can not boot from USB at all.

Background:
A bootable USB stick with my favorite image tool Drive Image would be a good stick ;)

Thanks for help !

Greetings,
Benja

I am able to boot from a Transcend Jetflash 2A usb key with my X31. If you enter the BIOS, does your USB key show up in the list of bootable devices (in the startup section of the BIOS)? I had always expected it to show up under the removable device section, but mine was found under the hard disk section. After moving it ahead of my hard drive in the boot order, I was able to boot fine. If it appears as a bootable device in BIOS, but you just cannot boot from it, let me know. There is a format utility for HP flash drives that works quite well to configure a usb key to boot with a given set of system files. I used the system files from a bootable floppy disk created in XP. This tool can be found on HP's website here:

Hope that helps a bit.

I used that tool to make my stick bootable (it is a Verbatim USB2.0 stick)
As you described, it appears unter Hard Disks in BIOS but I can not boot from it.
The X31 "hangs up" when I put the stick above the HDD and boot from it.
Maybe this is, because the stick is not correctly formated or because it simply is not bootable (Verbatim does neither say it is nor it is not bootable.

I do not have a PC here of which I know, it can boot from USB sticks so that I can not make a crosscheck right now. But I will try that later :)
Thanks anyway !
