X32 Startup Issues...

#1 Post by Bg357 » Fri Jul 08, 2011 2:43 pm

I have an X32 that was working fine until recently. We had a AC cord that broke at the jack and there was some electrical sparking noises and the computer acted a little weird and then shut down. I feared the worst and when I restarted it, it failed to boot and I got the following error messages.

Error 271 check date
Error 251 system CMOS checksum bad
Default configuration used
Error 1802 unauthorized network card us plugged in. Power off and remove mini pci card.

I went into the BIOS and reset the date, but I continued to get the 1802 error.
I then removed the wireless card and tried again. I got the 271 error again and reset the date in the BIOS again. The computer then booted up normally... less any wireless connection.
Since that time, I've booted it a few more times and intermittently gotten the 271 error and had to reset the date. Other times it starts normally and already has the correct time & date.

My questions are these?

1. Do I just need to replace the BIOS battery and the Wireless card and my problems will be solved?
2. Is something else going on here that will not be cured by replacing those?
3. Any idea what happened in the first place?
4. If I'm replacing my wireless card, is there a particular one that's better than the others? The one currently in it (well, not at the moment) is a BG2200.
5. Anyone have these two items laying around that they'd like to sell?

Side Note: I also need a standard battery for an X40, if anyone has one of those available, or a good source suggestion.

Thanks,

The first 3 errors go away by replacing the CMOS battery.
1802 error will go away by applying the NO-1802 hack from Thinkwiki: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_w ... et_devices.

Put the 2200BG back in after you have done the above, it'll be fine.
Get a new power supply and your problems should be over.

Thanks for the assistance.

I'm curious as to why the 1802 hack is needed at this point. I've never done it before.
Was it already on the system when I got it and just needs to be redone now because the CMOS battery died, or seemed to for awhile?
Does it need the hack because it has a different wireless card than it originally came with?

Should I head over to the marketplace for a CMOS battery, or are there better/quicker sources?

The laptop probably came with an 802.11b wifi card, most likely an Actiontec card.
When it was updated to the 2200BG, if it was not an IBM card (with IBM FRU or part number), it needed the hack. When the CMOS dies, the hack disappears, and needs to be reapplied after CMOS replacement, and before you put the wifi card back in.
CMOS can be had on eBay, or go to a pharmacy, buy a CR2032 battery, then carefully tear the contacts from the old CMOS battery, and put them on the same side of the new battery, then put some electrician's tape tightly around it.

Is there a reference somewhere that shows which Thinkpads use the same CMOS battery?
Browsing eBay would lead one to believe that the same battery fits many models, but others are listed with more narrow application lists. Hard to know what's accurate.

I have a number of Thinkpads that will probably need batteries soon, so I figured I'd try to get them all at the same time. Don't know if I can get the same one for all, or if I need to search for specific replacements.

There are at least four different types of CMOS batteries (by FRU numbers) that have leads already attached to them. There of them are shown here:

http://www.kawakami-ca.com/images/02k65 ... 2k6715.jpg

One that's missing is the 02K7078 for the R5x/X3x systems (and maybe others).

The Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) lists most of the part numbers used in the Thinkpad systems.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 44018.html (X3x system)
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 39298.html (Index of HMMs)

It's possible that the 02K7078 (X3x) battery uses one of the connectors shown in the photo; the difference may only be in the length of the wires. You also have to be careful that you use a battery that has the same polarity at the connector as the original. If you look closely in the photo, the T2x and X2x batteries use the same connector but the red and black (+ and -) wires are reversed between them. I don't have my X31 or R50 systems on hand to see what connector is used or how it's wired.
