X41 used, fair price?
X41 used, fair price?
I am thinking to buy a used X41 or X61 to serve as a netbook.
I need a light laptop and I would like to spend less than 300 euros.
Here in Italy X41 in good condition, (with specs like 1.5Gb, 60Gb HD, centrino 1,6Ghz, and battery still holding good time charge) are sold at about 150/180 euros. I don't think to need more powerful computing machine, I am currently using a T41p since many years.
Are those fair prices?

Re: X41 used, fair price?
Can't comment on the prices in Italy, but due to its extremely slow and lagging 1.8"/4200rpm drive, X41 is likely to be far less responsive than your T41p.
I'd go for X60/s, if you can fit one within your budget. If not, X31/X32 will provide performance comparable to what you're used to with T41p.
Happy hunting.

Would an X61s be a comparable (or even better) choice to the X60/ s?
looks like a vendor will have two of them next week for about 270 euros each.

Re: X41 used, fair price?
The X61s is much better.
It can take up to 8GB RAM, and with a special "Middleton" BIOS, it can be made to run at SATA II speed as well.
To use 8GB RAM you will need to install a 64-bit version of XP, Vista or W7.
32-bit versions can only use a little over 3GB RAM.

thanks!
as soon as I will have specs, and conditions, I will post it there to have a final advice,
just bad this model doesn't come with resolution higher than 1024x768, I am so used to my 1400x1050 T41p
but maybe on 12.1 higher res will be hard to read...

You can buy X61 models with SXGA+, just not sure which ones.
And you can also DIY.

That's is interesting!
Hope the seller have one of those models.
I don't think I could be able to do it by myself...
If it can be done I assume there is a guide somewhere on this forum, I go to search for it
Re: X41 used, fair price?
It's only the X61 Tablet that was offered with SXGA+ resolution. But, some brave souls have managed to transfer the tablet panel into a non-tablet X61, although I don't think it's an exact fit.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

With that budget, forget about Thinkpads. The non-tablet X Series was limited to 1024x768 until the X200/200s and X300, which had 1280x800 and 1440x900, but I think these still cost over 300 euros. Instead, try to get a Panasonic Toughbook CF-Y5 (or just "Y5") from eBay. You should be able to find one for under 200 euros, since mine cost me only $200 shipped. The Y5 has a Core Duo processor, takes standard 2.5" IDE hard drives, a 14.1" 1400x1050 screen, an internal optical drive, and weighs only 1.6 kg. Basically, it functions like a T-Series Thinkpad but has the weight of an X Series.achat_2 wrote:I need a light laptop and I would like to spend less than 300 euros.

Re: X41 used, fair price?
Pianowizard,
thanks for the advice, but I am one of that kind of "can't live without a trackpoint" persons, since 2003.
Nevertheless for 381 euros I could get a brand new X121e 1366x768 (without OS actually) and this is still an option for me.
Despite a X61s with an SXGA+ display sounds more appealing to me.
I like to buy used Thinkpad, I own two (bought used) T41p (seven years old machine I believe) and I am completely satisfied with them.
