Can a non x41 recovery disc be used to install windows?

#1 Post by odiethis » Wed Sep 14, 2011 11:56 am

Hey Everyone,
I've had my x 41 for about two years now, and I bought it used from my former place of work. When I received the computer, I got a dock, a monitor, the computer, and some recovery discs. However, they were for the mouse and that sort of thing, and nothing to restore windows. I'm not good with computers. I'm having some severe problems with my x41 which necessitates a windows re-install. From what I've gleaned, the x-41 set is 9 discs long, and I probably won't need everything. To be honest, I haven't used the tablet functions in over a year, so I don't care if that's active. My questions is- do I need to get the x-41 recovery set for my windows install, or could I just get a copy of xp from somewhere and install that? What issues would I have if I attempted that? What would the benefits be of getting the full recovery set? I don't want to spend the money it seems it would cost to get the recovery set, and I have a feeling i could find xp for relatively cheap. If I have to spend more than $40, I would rather just invest in a new $300 laptop. Any help would be appreciated, and please keep in mind, if I've said anything kind of stupid, it's not intentional, I'm just bad with computers. Thanks.

Well, your license key on your laptop is for xp tablet. It won't activate a regular xp os.

Do you still have the recovery partition on the hard drive? you could set it back to its factory state with that, if it's there.

The x41 restore discs have only one disc for the supplemental extra programs, all the rest are for the os and putting the recovery partition back on the hard drive.

Gateways and hp tablets only came with 2 discs. One was for the os and the other was for drivers and extra programs.

You could put a wanted to buy ad in the marketplace here for recovery discs.

Or, you could do like I did and download and install Windows 8 Developer Preview. It's free and it runs very well on an x41 tablet. Windows 8 will install all the drivers. And then when the beta comes out you can use that for free also. It's pretty neat.
