hi guys, just bought an X61 2nd hand, extremely happy with it, however the CPU fan is running constantly, and loud, sounds about on par with my T40 when its fans running 100% however the underside is pretty cool and the air blowing out is cool.
any ideas?
cheers

Two points:
1) Unlike most other Thinkpads, the fan on the X61 will run 90% of the time, regardless of load -- it seems to be a "feature" of the Santa Rosa chipset! You may wish to use TPFanControl to override what the BIOS is doing with the fan:

2) The loud fan noise is not normal, and if the noise is anything more than air flow, then perhaps the fan is worn out. There is no way to oil it or repair it in any way without removing the motherboard from the base ... and even then, the only effective repair is replacement.
Good luck!

thanks matey, i was thinking its possibly due to be replaced, its got a kinda rattle noise to it, best way i can think to describe it is the noise of a hard drive seeking (however im running an SSD!) new fan it is then!
other than that, very impressed by it so far! very snappy running the 2GHz Core 2 duo, 8gb of ram and the SSD with windows 7 ultimate!
thanks for your help.
