Does x61s need battery

I was given an x61s without battery or power supply, history unknown w/ centrino pro, xp pro, build date 08/01. I purchased an IBM 16v 4.5a power supply and the machine starts but gives message "190: critical low battery error" then suts down does this mean it will not operate without battery installed. Is there any way to work around this. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the Forum!
Wrong voltage! The connector from the 16v adapter should not have fit the X61s, but perhaps you changed the connector -- I don't know. In any case, you need a 20vdc 60Watt (minimum) power adapter. The X61s
will run with the correct power adapter only -- one does not need a battery.

Thanks for the reply EOMtp you were right. The power supply purchased from eb**Y was listed as the right supply for the x61s. It came with an adapter. But after I posted this question I tried again on the third or forth power up it will start only to be confronted with the need for a password. Pushing the blue thinkvantage button i found the option to restore the system to original factory installation which worked at the loss of the previous owners files which I didn't want to see anyway. The machine now freezes on the "windows is shutting down screen" and the screen brightness varies on it's own ( dims for second or two) I'll get the proper power supply, thanks again
