My IBM X61 comes with its build-in network adapter (for wired connection) but it strongly suggests it is now faulty.

Can I connect a USB network adapter instead? Are there any precautions or pre-requisites I must be aware of? Thank you so much.

You might also try a PCMCIA/CardBus adapter.
Maybe you need to disable the built-in one in the BIOS before the external one works...
