moving from X41 Tablet to X61S

#1 Post by Weogo » Wed Jan 11, 2012 1:48 pm

Hi Y'all,

I'm currently using an X41 Tablet for live audio work. My spare is a T410.
The X41T size & weight, 1024 x 768 resolution and 4:3 screen ratio work well for what I'm doing.
I rarely use the tablet features, though I very much appreciate the IPS screen.

I have the X41T pretty much maxxed out with two gigs or RAM and an SSD, but it still isn't enough to run all the programs I want at once.
So I'm looking at moving up to an X61S, for the faster performance and ability to access 8 gigs or RAM.
A conversion to an IPS screen would be part of the process.

A few questions:
) Does the X61S ExpressCard slot work at full speed? I would like to be able to use an Express card to USB-3 adapter for moving data on/off the laptop.

) Has anybody changed the display lighting on an X61 series from CCFL to LED?

) The old TABook doesn't show a model version 7668, but there is one with that number on Ebay right now.
Could this be European or something?

Thanks so much!

Good health, Weogo

If you get the X61s I would try to get one with the extra fan, I have an X60T and it does heat up, the X60 up to X61 with out the second fan does produce quite some heat. I would think that the X61s will still have a Flewview screen I would check up on that first if you already wanting to buy one. Flewview does look great when I compare it to my T510 lol I am not sure about the Express card I only use a flash card adapter but I would assume it has full speed.

No need for 2nd fan on X60T at least. I went for Intel 6200-N wifi card on it and the heat is non-existant after that. Of course refreshing the thermal paste on CPU, cleaning the heatsink from dust and undervolting the CPU dows miracles also :)

The X61s only comes in XGA (1024x768) but does not come with any IPS screen, those are limited to the tablets.
The X61T also comes in a version with SXGA+ (1400x1050), but I don't know if that is IPS or not.
It's possible to put one of those in a regular X61 or X61s, but requires quite a bit of VERY careful modification!

Hi Y'all,

I bought an x61S off ebay with the 1.8 processor and a damaged screen.
It appears to be in excellent condition, with very little use.

A Forum member has a 1400x1050 IPS screen from an X61 Tablet and is selling it to me, with a converted cable.

Makaveli,
As soon as I open it up I'll check for a second fan, and good to know about the express card speed.

Raceboy,
While working on the screen I'll also clean inside and re-do the thermal paste.
For the programs I'm running I don't know that I'll be able to undervolt. The processor is already 'ULV' ultra low voltage, so maybe it will be ok.
Do you know the exact part number for the Intel 6200-N card?
Cool running is very much a goal!

RBS,
I already read the thread you linked to, all 281 posts!

Thanks and good health, Weogo
