GPS WWAN on X60 Tablet

#1 Post by lukecr » Sat Jan 21, 2012 10:57 pm

Hello Everyone, and let me say thanks for all the help this site has provided in the past. I have searched everywhere for the answer to my question and I just can't find the exact response I am looking for. Please forgive me if it has been answered somewhere else but a link would be GREATLY appreciated if so! Anyways, I have a Lenovo X60 Tablet and it has the built in MC5720 Verizon MINI PCI card installed with all proper antenna's etc. I am looking to use it with an AT&T data plan (I have multiple lines on my business plan and actually have an EXTRA sim card activated and ready to go, i think? I can put it into my iPhone and it works fine so I assume its ready to go?!?!) and I understand I need to swap cards. I also understand that if I use any other card besides the MC8765 I will have to use a modified bios. Well I am looking to use a different card, specifically the Ericsson F3507G card. Now, heres my question: Will the GPS portion of the card work? If so does it only work with certain apps, like ones from AT&T directly? If not, is there another card that WILL accomplish this? I have Streets and Trips 2011 and I am looking to use the GPS portion of the app and trying to decide what's going to be the easiest way to accomplish this. I really don't want to rely on an external antenna if I don't have to. Again, the GPS is the main thing, as I have wifi hotspot enabled on my iPhone. But I would REALLY like to use my extra SIM card for internet AND GPS... That would be the ultimate goal!

I tried to get F3507g GPS module working but couldn't succeed. I had the latest drivers, the GPS sensor showed up nicely in W7 "Locations and sensors", MS Autoroute "saw" it but said it transmits unknown (not NMEA) protocol after I showed the GPS COM port manually (it was COM7 iirc).
ThinkVantage GPS enable also did not find it.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Out of curiosity how does the card work for internet connectivity? What carrier do you use it with? It's true GPS right, not like triangulation through cell towers? I saw you have a T61 with the same card in it, does the GPS feature work on the T61? Lol, I actually have a T61 also (Just the T61 though) and I never thought about changing cards in it. I wonder if anyone else has had any luck with any other cards. Sorry for the 20 questions, just trying to decide what to do. I need to purchase a replacement card that will work with AT&T, but if I can get one with GPS I definitely want to.

FWIW, for any of the Ericsson WWAN cards you definitely need to have a SIM in the SIM reader for the Lenovo GPS Enabler stuff to work. It doesn't need to be a SIM for an active 3G account, any electronically working SIM (i.e. not "broken") will do.

The read-me file for lastest version of the Lenovo GPS Enabler utility (v2.73) says:
  • (New) Added support for SIM card-free for GPS tracking with using Ericsson
    F5521gw adapter
(New) Updated the Google Maps API to v3 in ThinkVantage Maps.
.... but in my current experience, SIM free GPS operation is it is still not supported for the F5521gw, or the F3705g, and they will not work unless there is a SIM in the reader.

Cheers,

Bill B.

I am aware of the Ericsson card requirement and I had a fully working SIM card inserted and my 3G connection worked fine. But not GPS.

Yes. The Lenovo GPS Enabler will show which satellites its getting usable signal levels from.

GPS operation in a ThinkPad indoors is somewhat hit and miss, but outdoors its generally good.

Cheers,

Bill B.
