x61t no backlight (and dumb user)
x61t no backlight (and dumb user)
I was pulling apart my x61 tablet about two months ago. I had it unplugged but I forgot to pull the battery. Of course, as I'm taking out a screw I get a spark, and the backlight no longer functions when I reassemble it (screen itself still works, confirmed with a flashlight.) I assumed I popped a fuse on the inverter, so for $20 I replaced both boards in the LCD. I'm still getting the same issue. I'm at the point where it seems it must be the backlight itself, which was dim anyway, or the motherboard. Is there any way to check the output of the inverter? I have a multimeter, but I think the output of the inverter would be a bit much for it. Also, how does the lid closed work on this, so I can eliminate that as a possibility. I'm used to there being a little switch, but I'm not spotting one. The last question is if there's a backlight fuse on the motherboard of this, as I could check and replace that if I knew which fuse it was.
EDIT: Just to make myself look worse, I made one more desperate attempt on google, and it finally shows up. Looks like F2 on the motherboard may be the issue. I'd love a confirmation on that, but I'll find out tomorrow for sure when I get it apart.
Thanks!

Re: x61t no backlight (and dumb user)
Check out the thread X60 Fuselist at the top of this forum.
X60 and X61 don't differ that much from one another.
The output voltage of the inverter (to the pink/white cable into LCD) is rather high.
Depending on model, it can be as high as 1500V at startup, and will be around 800V during operation.
Don't play with it!

Re: x61t no backlight (and dumb user)
It's f2 for sure. The fuselist isn't quite the same for the x61t as the x60, but looking helped. F2 isn't mentioned on the mb but it's a 3A fuse, and it is the same fuse as the 3A used on the x60. Where it's on the mb, I think I'm actually going to play the waiting game and install a new fuse, instead on ball some solder over it. I hate paying more in shipping than the entire total of my order though.
If anyone needs to find it, f2 is right between the back-side of the processor and the port the display extension board plugs in to. You don't even need to take out the whole motherboard, just pull back the plastic down as far as the bios battery and dig out your meter. It's just above f5, so don't be confused about the wording describing f5.
As for testing output voltage of an inverter, I've got enough experience with high voltage to handle it. I've realized it's just an excuse for me to go buy that expensive scope I wanted, and make an inverter pigtail for it! I'm thinking I can convince my boss that it's needed at the shop for testing IR remote outputs.
Thanks!

Or suggest to your boss that he can save a lot of money by NOT buying you that scope,
and instead give you some petty cash to go buy yourself a new inverter...

Re: x61t no backlight (and dumb user)
So I got the fuses in. I wisely got ten of them figuring I'd lose the first 9, and if the tenth didn't work I'd go to plan B (AKA drop of solder, and usually plan A.
) Tried to get out the first fuse, and it sprung immediately onto my dark blue carpet. I knew it was my lucky day when I actually found the first fuse. I managed to get it in and working without touching any of the rest of them. Now that my LCD has had a full disassembly (down to splitting apart the screen) and cleaning, it looks and works great! Not to get that LED backlight I've been working on built...
As for a scope, my bosses would go broke trying to replace every inverter I wanted to test!
Makes me kinda miss the college days when I could take my parts into the lab and use the nice scopes, variable heat soldering irons with clamps and magnifying lenses, and the bin full of parts across the hall...
