What SXGA+ Panels work for the X61 installation?
What SXGA+ Panels work for the X61 installation?
I have two X6x tablet systems with SXGA+ panels. The systems both appear to function well but with the following considerations:
One (X60t) is an engineering model, but boy it is nice and bright - but the plastics are 'non-standard' and missing parts.
The second (X61t) has 'bubbles' around the edges - where the surface plastic started coming off of the LCD itself (at least I think that's what's happening).
Both systems work fine but I can't sell them as they each have cosmetic issues.
Is the LCD with the 'bubbles' a workable LCD for the conversion? Advice is appreciated .. and these are up for sale on the forum (see link here for that post)

If - and that's a BIG if - you manage to take the upper portion (layer) without damaging the screen, then yes, it's a match made in heaven for converting a non-tablet X6x into an IPS (actually AFFS) SXGA+ unit...
If not...I might be interested in that engineering sample...
Good luck.

Re: What SXGA+ Panels work for the X61 installation?
Thanks, George.
Someone else indicated some LCDs have a plastic covering - others have glass. I don't know which each of them are - I haven't taken them apart yet. If I tap on the surface, they sound different. I think I'll take one apart (bubbles) and see what I can see. Glass is next to impossible to remove, or so he said. Time to stop wondering and start tinkering ..
Bob
PS: Okay - I looked into 'bubbles' - it's plastic with a VERY sticky goo between the plastic and the LCD - almost worse than pine pitch. Is that the way it's supposed to be? I can start to pry up the plastic but don't want to go further until I read up on how to take it off 'the right way'. Or I just might sell it as it is if someone is interested in it .. The display is fine (at this point). PM if you're interested in 'bubble'.

Re: What SXGA+ Panels work for the X61 installation?
The goo is unbelievably sticky and horrible.
Someone has managed to get rid of it - http://thinkwiki.de/X61t_Glasplatte_ohn ... l%C3%B6sen (in German). I wouldn't recommend it, it's a messy hassle and at any point a little mistake and the screen is broken.
On the other hand, if the bubbles are just at the edge you may be able to get rid of them by warming the goo (hairdryer works well) and using a syringe to suck out the air.
If not I might be interested - having broken the last screen with bubbles I've learned my lesson, I'll live with them.
Regards,
Tom

It is actually pretty easy to remove. I have done it several times and you need the very thin exacto knife or the like. Just cut through the sticky tape and put a small sticks where you cut (thickness around 1-2 mm) in order to avoid the surfaces touching again.

Re: What SXGA+ Panels work for the X61 installation?
Honestly, removing the bonded glass from a HV121P01-101 isn't easy for most people.
Re: What SXGA+ Panels work for the X61 installation?
Of the two that I have, one came off very easily (engineering model) as there was a 3mm thick rubber pad around the edge. The plastic wasn't even touching the LCD surface. The other has goo - lots of goo. That one will come off easily (hair dryer will soften it) but cleaning the goo will be hard.
I understand there are two types of surface .. glass and plastic. I could see where the glass might be difficult as it won't flex like the plastic will as you peel it off. Fortunately, it looks like I don't have a glass one.
Thanks for all the info from this forum .. Bob

Re: What SXGA+ Panels work for the X61 installation?
Would HV121P01 be the only panel which works with the mod?
What about displays used in Toshiba Portege M200/M400?

Re: What SXGA+ Panels work for the X61 installation?
Hi,
If you decide to sell the one with the goo under the glass layer I'm looking to buy one for my X61T... please PM me. I broke the LCD screen trying to remove the broken glass layer. I wouldn't recommend anyone trying to take it off. That goo is so sticky that nearly impossible to remove.

Re: What SXGA+ Panels work for the X61 installation?
Hi Docentore,
I don't know about the Toshiba displays.
Thanks and good health, Weogo
Actually the HV121P01-100 is the best screen choice because the plastic screen cover is fairly easy to remove.docentore wrote:Would HV121P01 be the only panel which works with the mod?

Re: What SXGA+ Panels work for the X61 installation?
Toshiba displays use 30pin connectors with 2 lvds channels. But after some searching I can see that no one ever tried it.docentore wrote:Would HV121P01 be the only panel which works with the mod?

I'm going to bite the bullet and try it myself. Will report any findings
