X61 GPU overheating or not?

#1 Post by Faenad » Wed Mar 14, 2012 5:37 pm

I was wondering what the normal temperature is for the GPU on a Thinkpad X61.

I got a X61 from eBay that was overheating. After applying new thermal paste and undervolting the processor, the processor temperature seems now under control:
Idle temp is 52C° with fan off, stress temp about 80C° (with the fan controlled by the Bios at such temps). Ambient temp is about 23C°, with a 2 GHz T7300.

But it seems that the GPU temps are still quite high, about 39c° idle to 58C° when stressing the CPU. In fact during a 30 minutes CPU stress session the windows desktop disabled the aero mode, which I think is related to the GPU overheating.

Also, when reapplying thermal paste, I noticed the GPU is sharing the same copper plate than the CPU. I don’t applied new thermal paste on the GPU as there was a thick thermal pad, I was afraid a thinner layer of thermal paste would not allow a good contact. Even with the thermal pad the contact between the plate and the GPU don’t seem very secure.

Does anybody have some experience with the same issue? Is there a similar utility than RMclock for managing the GPU?
