I just got a 7762-BEU X61t on ebay cheap ($255) with the touchscreen enabled and plan to run Windows 8 Beta. I just need to install the SSD and be good to go. If I install this : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820139415

Will it be compatible? I installed the Middleton Bios just before I removed the 160GB HD. I am aware that the SATA II works only and not SATA III from what I read in a chart somewhere.

I am just trying to make sure that I am getting the right parts even though the information is available.

Yes, actually any 2.5" SATA SSD should work.

If I get a SSD SATA III drive, will the machine deny any usage of the drive? Or will the drive run but at the max of 3GB SATA 2 speed?

no it will work just fine, but cap at sata2. I have an intel 320 sata3 in my x61 and it works fine at sata2 with middleton's bios.

ssd's are truly amazing. I never have to hibernate anymore because boot ups and shut downs are blazing fast!

I've got an SSD in my x60 tablet, and the main benefit to me is that I can swing it and jiggle it while it's accessing the drive without any concern of a head crash. For me, it's the freedom more than the speed.

I have a crazy idea. I saw a 1.8 LIF SSD for sale. Is there a converter I can buy to get it to work ? Will it work at full speed or are converters known to degrade in performance?

You need to verify the voltage of that SSD.
The X61T supplies 5V which is needed for 2.5" SSDs
Most 1.8" SSDs only require 3.3V.

This is the item i plan to use as a SSD and it does support 3.3V.

Using ebay items, can you recommend which parts you can recommend? That middle piece connector seems tricky.

Most 1.8" hard drives (including the Hitachi ones for X4x series) support both 5/3.3V supply voltages.

Wait, a LIF SSD? Are you sure it's SATA, not PATA?

Is the price difference so big compared to a 2.5" that makes the extra work worth? 60/80GB SSDs are quite affordable nowadays, and it's just plug and play, no fiddling with ZIF cables, no adapters, no worries about voltage. Just put it in and voila! It works!!!
