Transplant an X60s fan into an X61 - possible?

#1 Post by Ollo » Fri Apr 13, 2012 8:11 am

Greetings!

Just got me a very well used X61 to replace my dead X60s. The fan on the X61 is louder and I was thinking of trying to replace it with the fan from the X60s. I know the heatsinks are different, and also, from memory, the fans are of a different kind/brand (one has a sticker, one is solid plastic without sticker), but was hoping the fans would be a drop in replacement (yeah right...). If not, perhaps it will fit with modest modifications? The X61 is indervolted and runs very cool, so a bit less cooling won't be a problem, in case the X60s fan is less efficient - I much prefer its quiet operation!

Anyone have any experience in this?

Cheers!

X60s fan fits into X60 but not vice versa because the X60 fan is thicker.

The required fan depends on your CPU, but within the same CPU-type they should be interchangeable within X60/X61 versions and within the X60s/X61s versions, but AFAIK not between X6x and X6xs.
Check the HMM.
You can also buy separate fans which you can attach to your heatsink.
Lots of them on eBay.

As I said, you can put the X60s fan to X60, but not vice versa as the X60 fan is thicker. I know this from a personal experience as I was testing them both against each other. This is not a speculation.

Thanks for you replies!

I'll open the systems up and poke around a bit. I can't seem to find the maintenance videos from lenovo's site though. Through Google I ony find videos for adding ram, changing HD and easy stuff. Anyone have a link to the deep surgery videos?

Thanks!

EDIT: I think I found the videos: http://www.lenovoservicetraining.com/ion/X60/index.html

Was easier fo find when I googled for X60 instead of X61.

Raceboy, did you replace only the fan, or the complete heatsink & fan unit? I'm starting to think it might be easier to just switch the whole unit. The downside would be, it would leave a gap between the heatsink and the bottom plate of the laptop case.

(I'm running the X61 at very low voltages and underclocked, so it dissipates less heat than the X61s CPUs. I am not worried about heat. I also only use the laptop for light computing.)

EDIT: I pulled out the heatsink & fan unit of the X60s. Although it might be possible to detach the fan, it seems unlikely it will fit in the fan housing of the larger X61 cooler. Or?

Yes, I swapped the whole unit, not just the fan.
