external video not working

#1 Post by jeffik » Wed Jul 11, 2012 9:58 am

I have an x61 tablet. I want to connect a large monitor when i am at home. I turned on both parallel and serial ports. I connected a monitor to the vga port. When I do fcn and display properties. I select both but the monitor shows no signal. I tried two monitors and got same result. Both monitors work on my asus netbook. Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Sometimes you need to 'cycle' a few times through Fn/F7 before it catches.
Have you installed the proper drivers for it?
Maybe you are missing Presentation Director?

Hello again, thanks to those who looked and replied. Now the x61 is crashing. Suddenly displays what looks like the matrix, and after about 5 seconds shuts down and restarts. Some times it runs for a while some times a short time but eventually does the same thing and crashes. Even log says unexpected shut down, no other information. I took it apart and cleaned fan but it did look good and is passing air. I had a shop replace the video chip. Anybody have any idea? you can see a video of what the crash looks like at

Thanks in advance.

1. Do you monitor the temps?
2. Have you tested the RAM?
3. When you disassembled the laptop, did you apply new thermal paste?

Hi axur-delmeria, Thanks for your reply and information. I had not looked at those issues. I returned it to the shop Saturday. I have sent your suggestions on to them. I can work on laptops, I do IT work, but I am not comfortable to tear down my own laptop. They have all the tools to do this. I really love this laptop, my all time favourit of all that I have had. I know i could have taken it to the authorized IBM service location and I am sure they would have figured it out, but also handed me a $1000 bill. It was literally two weeks out of warranty when this originally happened. I put it in a box to deal with it later. I took it out in April. Initially it ran for a few weeks without and problem and then what you saw in the video started again. I had no idea what could be the cause. Your suggestions make sense, so thank you so much again. I will post the results from the shop in a couple of days.
