You shouldn't need to worry about anything... it was only the 9
280 that seemed to be picky about particular configurations.

So I just installed the N6200
http://www.ebay.de/itm/261159277070?ssP ... 1439.l2649 - this very one - and it's running no cooler than the Atheros AR5BXB6. Could still cook an egg on the underside. Could I have chosen a better wifi card?

Could still cook an egg on the underside.
Wifi-related heat issues only affect the right palmrest.
In other words, changing the wifi card will have no effect the underside's temperature.

I find that the heat on the right palmrest, where the wifi card is, can also be felt on the underside directly underneath the right palmrest, in direct proportion to the heat on the front palmrest, and is thus nearly 100% certain to be attributable to the wifi card. So the question still stands, if anyone has any useful remarks/suggestions..?

I have two X61s machines, both with Intel 6200N wifi cards.
They are at the most lukewarm.
If yours reaches egg-boiling temps, you have a bad card, I'd say...

It's actually getting better. I was advised to flash the BIOS with XP installed, the heat returned when when I ran Update Manager after reinstalling elementary OS, but hasn't been noticeable today. I should also note that today, the weather has been 25 degrees, whereas it touched on 30 yesterday, which I guess I should have taken into account.

Are you running anythig like TLP or laptopmodetools to control the power consumption of elementary OS via acpi? Linux power opimisation is primitive compared to windows although its getting better now.
Also run Powertop to see what it finds.

I'm running TLP, I'll have a look at Powertop when I get time. The palmrest blazing hot again today.

I've found a linux utility called Thinkfan, takes a bit of playing about to get it set up, might help. With TLP you could try running the wifi in powersave mode while running on AC.

Please, does anyone know if there is room to accommodate an Apple branded Broadcom BCM94360CD and can X61 make use of the BT4.0?
Interested in enabling it with AC as I have an AC router but also I have a AR9380 sitting in my now-toast T61p. May consider purchasing an Intel 7260, but I do have a (hopefully?) perfectly good AR9380 at my disposal...

No idea, might help if you start a new thread as more people can see your question.

Try putting it into the 2nd mini-PCIe slot.
Most combo cards have a USB-based Bluetooth chip, and only the 2nd slot has USB signals.
