Sxga+ X60T lid on a X61T?

#1 Post by Derkach99 » Thu Nov 08, 2012 12:39 am

I am curious if I can take a X60T with an SXGA+ screen as well as the housing and put it on a X61T that has an XGA panel. If this is possible what work would I have ahead of me in a nutshell?

Physically it should work, but you're probably going to run into problems with the BIOS being set up for XGA instead of SXGA+. If i remember correctly there was a modded BIOS for SXGA+ but you'll have to search for it.

It should work straight away. Both X60t and X61t came with native SXGA+ so BIOS would not be a problem.

It WILL work "right out of the box". No ifs, ands or buts.

Good this is my safe route around the bubbling issue. I recently brought an X60 with sxga+ (6363-HAU) for just under $200 in total. would it be worth it to get an xga based X61t and swap the screens?

I'd enjoy that X60T for now...if you find out that you really need more than 3GB of RAM, then go for X61T...

In my experience, X61T is a far noisier machine than its older sibling...YMMV.

Is the SXGA+ BIOS issue only present in the non-tablet X60 then? Because i remember reading someone on this forum having an issue with it from replacing an SXGA+ motherboard with an XGA one.

Yes.

For SXGA+ mod on a non-tablet X6x, one needs a custom BIOS.

I find the X61T quiet.

In terms of quietness factor, here's the order I rate them in

X61T, X61s, X60, X61
X62 SXGA+ i7 5600u
Carbon X1 i5 UHD
W520 quad-i7
X131e AMD
Sony Vaio P799 (8" LED 1600x768)
"Think" Ultrabook i7

in storage:
X61T Touch L7500
X61T SXGA+ 8GB
X60/X60s, X61, T61, T420, X30

past:
X24, X23, X22, X21, X20, 390X

i assume when you say X60 you meant X60T. I'd stay with the X60T (with SXGA) until you spot someone selling a cheap X61T. There shouldn't be a rush for you unless you want > 3GB RAM or want to use SSD today. You'll probably be able to pick up a X61T with a broken screen (or no screen at all) for cheap, and that'd make the deal even better.

I have the machine now and the screen is excellent tons of space. I think for the time being I am going to leave it alone. With the unit being Sata1 is it worth putting an SSD in it?

Hi dmdsoftware,
I find my X61T's fan noisy - and VERY WARM - current 74'C which is already low.
How did you solve the overheat issue - is there any overheat issue for your X61T to begin with?

Absolutely.

You'll be surprised how snappy that machine can be, with a 3GB RAM, SSD and Windows 7...speaking from experience here...loved it.

+1. I have X60T with L7400 Core 2 Duo CPU, Crucial C300 SSD and maxed out RAM, very snappy and at the same time absolutely quiet and cool.

Linux works quite well too. My R60e, though my oldest machine, often feels the fastest due to the Intel SSD and Linux OS.

Never had any overheating issues with any of the L processors including the X61T. I've had overheating issues with X60 and X61.
