X61 won't power up

Hello everyone,

I have a X61 that died last night. I was checking my email and all of a sudden it just shut off. I removed the battery, pressed the power button a few times, and put it back it, but no luck. The indicator lights (battery, ac power) don't turn on when I plug it in. There is no response at all. I am thinking that it might be the power supply, but I don't know. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

Robert

Does it run on battery alone?
The PSU from your T60 will also work on the X61.
Have you tried another mains outlet?

Remove battery and AC, then hold down the power button for about 15-20 seconds.
Insert just AC and try to boot.

Thank you for your response. One of the first things I did was holding down the power button, but it still does not power up, with or without the battery. There is no response at all.
My girlfriend has the T60, but she is 3000 miles away right now; I have the new x230, but I am not sure if the power supply is the same as the X61.
Any other suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If the adapter outputs 20V (check the label) and physically fits the power jack, it is good to use.

I think I made a nomenclature mistake: when I wrote the power supply, I meant the yellow connector that is attached to the motherboard, not the AC adapter. My apologies. Any other ideas?

I am starting to think that it's the motherboard. So, that leads me to the next question(s):

1. How difficult/feasible is it to change it?
2. Is it better to just part it out?
3. My hdd was not password protected. I have a backup, but the last time I ran it was a month or so ago. I can throw the hdd in an enclosure and recover whatever data I hadn't backed up, correct?

Again, any input is welcome. Thank you in advance.

Answers to your three questions above:

1) Replacing the motherboard in an X61 is simple and easy -- a handful of screws.
See details in the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual):
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides- ... MIGR-62866

2) One can get a working X61 motherboard for circa $50. Unlikely that it's worth one's time to dismantle and sell the remaining parts.

3) The hard drive will plug-and-play as is -- no need to restore from backup or engage in similar gymnastics.
